I don't think we need appsdir review of this: it's been amply
discussed on apps-discuss already, and Graham has already given his
OK.

> draft-saintandre-urn-example-03
> draft-saintandre-iana-urn-01

Peter has changes to make for both of these. They should be reviewed,
but please wait until they're updated (after Orlando). Watch for the
state change into In Last Call.

Ok.

yes, but there are 4 more documents to be added to the set, just waiting
on Shepherding work.

The 5 documents will be processed as a set.

Thanks, Dave. I'll wait for the set to be ready. Peter, I'll keep
draft-ietf-repute-model-04 for you.

I'll likely suggest two (URI/JSON) reviewers for the set as the
drafts are short. I have to ask the Apps ADs how they want to handle the set.

Best regards,

I understand. I usually avoid having reviewers on six months leave
except for members of the IAB, IESG and IAOC. I'll email you
off-list and we can see how to work things out.

Best regards,

I'd like to review webfinger, and I'll be giving acct-uri a once-over again
anyway.

Whether or not you want these to be "official" or not is up to you.

I'll probably be looking over Peter's two URN drafts too, but I can't
promise.

The draft-ietf-appsawg-webfinger-10 assignment is yours.

If Barry is ok with it you can do the draft-ietf-appsawg-acct-uri-03
as an AppsDir review as you are going to review it anyway.

The joint App Chairs and App Directorate lunch meeting at IETF 86 is
in Boca 3 (the IESG meeting room). Please grab lunch and meet there,
and let's chat for a bit about some things we need to share with the
chairs, how to expand the AppDir, and other such things. Revised ICS
file attached.

We understand that not all of you can make it; that's fine. Come if
you can, but don't worry about it if you can't.

Rough notes from the App Chairs and AppsDir lunch meeting at IETF 86,
Monday, 11 March. Please send me corrections, additions, and comments.

*Look for chairs and appsdir members*

   - ACTION: All chairs who are not already appsdir members, please
   consider joining; see SM.
   - ACTION: All chairs, please keep an eye out in your working groups for
active, insightful participants who can join appsdir and/or who might be
good as new chairs. See Barry/Pete.

*Writing quality & reviews*
Discussion of writing quality of documents, and how that affects reviews.
Note that focusing on issues is better than spending time & effort on nits.
At the same time, too many nits can make for a very hard-to-read document,
so calling that out is important.

*Document shepherds*
Brief discussion of document shepherding.

   - ACTION: When you're shepherding a document, the ADs expect you to have
thoroughly reviewed the document. Please post your shepherd review to the
mailing list, so it's on record.
   - ACTION: Please have a look at draft-leiba-extended-doc-shepherd.
Comments to Barry, and also consider following the advice described in it.

*Using the datatracker*
Brief discussion of ongoing enhancements to the datatracker. There's a new
feature that's not quite finished, which allows submission of a document
through a tracker state change (email is triggered automatically).

   - ACTION: Chairs, please always set the shepherd field in the
datatracker and post shepherd writeup to the datatracker.
   - ACTION: Request publication by setting document state to "Sent to IESG
for Publication", and *also* (for now), send email to the AD noting that
you did that. No need to include the shepherd writeup if you have put the
   writeup into the tracker.

*DISCUSS positions to WG lists?*
Discussion of whether IESG DISCUSS positions, along with the ensuing
discussion, should be copied to the WG mailing lists. Extended discussion
-- mostly support on the grounds of openness and accountability, but some
concern about "noise" on the mailing lists, opening old wounds, that sort
of thing.

   - ACTION: App ADs will do this on an experimental basis; if you want to
try it for your working group, please let your AD know.

*Target audience, who understands the doc?*
WGs often respond to cross-area questions by saying that anyone who works
in this space would understand this. But is that really true? Where do we
find the balance between saying too much (we can't explain *everything*)
and not saying enough (and getting bad implementations because people *don't
* really understand)?

Barry, thanks for the notes.

There is currently a section for nits in the template (
http://trac.tools.ietf.org/area/app/trac/wiki/template ). I suggest
removing that section so that nits are not part of AppsDir
review. The reason is as explained above. If you have any opinion
please post them to the mailing list.

I think different reviewers deal different with nits. Some reviewers
just read over them, without noticing. Some others may notice them, but
don't care too much. Some may not feel okay if they don't report the
nits they have seen.

I personally belong into the last category. Carsten's proposal to send
nits separately would only create more work for me.

I have nothing against saying somewhere that reviewers should focus on
issues rather than on nits, but I don't think it's necessary to dictate
how the reviewers have to do the reviews; they should be allowed to do
what works best for them.

Regards, Martin.

No one is "dictating" anything; we're talking about suggestions and
general guidelines.

The bottom line is that we very much appreciate the reviews, and we
thank the reviewers for taking the time and trouble to do them.

Thanks for the feedback. I should have mentioned=20
the above. At least we have a mailing list so=20
that we can discuss about the pros and cons with everyone.

Reviewers already focus on issues. As a quick=20
comment for context, Pete mentioned that he might=20
be distracted by the nits and miss the issues=20
mentioned in the review. The suggestion was to=20
remove the nits section from the template. That=20
does not mean that you should not include=20
nits. The template is a guidance; i.e. it's=20
there to make the life of the reviewer easier.

The template is perfectly clear. Important stuff first, nits later. This
makes the task straightforward for:
- the reviewer - keep one review doc open as you read, pour comments into
the appropriate section
- IESG other content-oriented readers of the review - stop reading when you
get to =93nits=94
- doc editors - you have to read the review end-to-end

It ain=92t broken, don=92t fix it. -T

Hello,

The following persons have kindly volunteered at IETF 86 to be part
of the Applications Area Directorate:

  Alex Sergeyev
  Bert Greevenbosch
  He Xuan
  Kerry Lynn
  Ray Polk

  Cyrus Daboo
  Karen O'Donoghue
  Martin Thomson
  Tony Hansen

I am aware that Cyrus, Karen, Martin and Tony have been or are WG
chairs. I gather that they already know the directorate reviews work. :-)

There was a Joint Review experiment [1] in January 2012 where two
reviewers were assigned a review. I would like to run the experiment
again with Alex, Bert, He, Kerry and Ray. I'll post a message about
the experiment in a few days.

As mentioned during the Applications Area session at IETF 86 the
expectation is for each reviewer to perform two reviews monthly. In
practice, everyone does one review or less monthly. I try to spread
the workload as far as possible. I usually try to provide about two
weeks notice when assigning reviews.

Members of the IAB, IESG and IAOC are automatically put on leave
(they do not get any assignments unless they decide otherwise).

You can ask not to be given assignments for a some time if you email
me in advance. Possible reasons are, you changed jobs, you are too
busy, personal reasons, etc.

The directorate web page is at
http://trac.tools.ietf.org/area/app/trac/wiki/ApplicationsAreaDirectorate
You can edit the web page (it is a wiki) and add your name, expertise
and the working groups you follow to it. I use that information to
suggest a reviewer. For example, if a draft has XML in it I suggest
assigning the review to a person who listed XML as his/her expertise.

You can get a login for the wiki by going to
http://trac.tools.ietf.org/tools/loginmgr/newlogin You can also send
me the information and I'll post it to the web page.

The template at
http://trac.tools.ietf.org/area/app/trac/wiki/template is used for
directorate reviews.  Reviewers are not obliged to use the template;
it's there as guidance. Reviews are usually sent to
apps-discuss@ietf.org,
draft-name-without-version-num.all@tools.ietf.org. The review is
also copied to iesg@ietf.org if a Last Call has been issued.

There is a list of reviews at
http://trac.tools.ietf.org/area/app/trac/wiki/tracker Feel free to
take a look at them to see the work of the existing reviewers. The
appsdir@ietf.org mailing list is used for discussions about the
directorate, for requests for reviews, etc. The mailing list archive
is at http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/appsdir/current/maillist.html

If you have any questions feel free to email me. I would like to
thank you all for volunteering your free time and effort.

Best regards,
-sm

I like the above. :-)

Hello,

The Apps Area Review Team (predecessor of the directorate) tried a
joint review experiment in February 2012. It did not go as expected
[1]. I will be trying the experiment once again. If it fails I get
the blame, if it succeeds those of you who perform the joint reviews
get the credit. :-)

This Joint Review Experiment is different from the previous
one. Some of you have been part of the directorate for some time
now; you already know how the IETF works and you are familiar with
the interaction. I will ask one of you to work together with a
reviewer who joined the directorate recently. I will list two names
for the assignment. I will leave it to the two persons to work out
how to do the work. There is a previous joint review at
http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/apps-discuss/current/msg04275.html

If you have any questions please feel free to send me a private email.

Best regards,
-sm
