CALL FOR PAPERS

The 14th International Workshop on Network and Operating Systems Support
for Digital Audio and Video (NOSSDAV 2004)=20
June 16-18, 2004 --- Kinsale, County Cork, Ireland=20

http://www.nossdav.org/2004/

NOSSDAV 2004 will take place in Kinsale on the exceptionally scenic
southern coast of Ireland. Kinsale is approximately a 20 minute drive
outside Cork city, which is within easy reach of major European capitals
and the east coast of the US. The workshop is sponsored by ACM SIG
Multimedia (preliminary approval), Microsoft Research and Science
Foundation Ireland, and is in cooperation with ACM SIGCOMM (preliminary
approval).

NOSSDAV invites submissions on all areas of multimedia, but strongly
encourages submissions in newly emerging specialized areas such as
networked games and peer-to-peer streaming. NOSSDAV 2004 will be run
very much as a workshop with an emphasis on cutting-edge research and
lively discussion. Papers grounded in high-quality experimental research
based on prototype or real systems, including innovative experimental
commercial designs and prototypes, as well as papers proposing new
research directions for the community or calling into question existing
conventional wisdom are particularly welcome. ***Student participation
is strongly encouraged*** - supported by several student travel grants
and registration fee rebates.

Submissions should be no longer than 6 pages. The expectation is that
papers accepted at the workshop will eventually lead to full-length
papers at high-quality conferences or journals. The topics of interest
include, but are not limited to:

* Networked games
* Peer-to-peer multimedia
* Broadband streaming media content distribution
* 3D multimedia and (networked) immersive environments
* Wireless and ad-hoc network multimedia systems
* Embedded multimedia devices (e.g., PVRs)
* Multimedia security
* Internet telephony
* Sensory interactive applications
* Digital rights management

Deadlines:

Paper registration deadline - February 23, 2004, (5pm EST) (*firm*)=20
Paper submission deadline - March 1, 2004, (5pm EST) (*firm*)

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.

	Title : MLEF Considered Harmful
	Author(s)	: F. Baker
	Filename	: draft-baker-tsvwg-mlef-concerns-00.txt
	Pages : 19
	Date : 2003-12-2

The Defense Information Systems Agency of the United States
Department of Defense, with is contractors, has proposed a service
architecture for military (NATO and related agencies) telephone
systems. This is called the Assured Service, and is defined in two
documents: 'Architecture for Assured Service Capabilities in Voice
over IP' and 'Requirements for Assured Service Capabilities in Voice
over IP'. Responding to these are four documents: 'Reason Header
Field for the Session Initiation Protocol', 'Extending the Session
Initiation Protocol Reason Header to account for Preemption Events',
'Communications Resource Priority for the Session Initiation
Protocol', and the 'Multi-Level Expedited Forwarding Per Hop
Behavior' (MLEF PHB). MLEF, as currently defined, has serious
problems, which this draft seeks to discuss.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-baker-tsvwg-mlef-concerns-00.txt

To remove yourself from the IETF Announcement list, send a message to
ietf-announce-request with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-baker-tsvwg-mlef-concerns-00.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-baker-tsvwg-mlef-concerns-00.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

-------- Original Message --------
Subject: Protocol Action: 'The Differentiated Services Configuration MIB' to Proposed Standard
Date: Mon, 08 Dec 2003 11:48:55 -0500
From: The IESG <iesg-secretary@ietf.org>
To: IETF-Announce:;
CC: Internet Architecture Board <iab@iab.org>,RFC Editor <rfc-editor@rfc-editor.org>, <snmpconf@snmp.com>

The IESG has approved following document:

- 'The Differentiated Services Configuration MIB '
   <draft-ietf-snmpconf-diffpolicy-09.txt> as a Proposed Standard

This document is the product of the Configuration Management with SNMP
Working Group.

The IESG contact person is Bert Wijnen.

Technical Summary

This memo describes a MIB module that provides a conceptual layer
between high-level "network-wide" policy definitions that effect
configuration of the Differentiated Services (diffserv) subsystem and
the instance-specific information that would include such details as
the parameters for all the queues associated with each interface in a
system. This essentially provides an interface for configuring
differentiated services at a conceptually higher layer than that of
 the Differentiated Services MIB.

Working Group Summary

The working group has consensus that this document be published as
a Proposed Standard. The WG worked extensively with people from the
DIFFSERV WG to make sure that this document and RFC3289 are in sync
 and can be used together.

Protocol Quality

This document was reviewed for the IESG by Bert Wijnen.

Hi,

FYI: this is a first draft in the PDB series.

Subject: RFC 3662 on A Lower Effort Per-Domain Behavior (PDB) for Differentiated Services

A new Request for Comments is now available in online RFC libraries.

        RFC 3662

Title: A Lower Effort Per-Domain Behavior (PDB) for
                    Differentiated Services
        Author(s): R. Bless, K. Nichols, K. Wehrle
        Status: Informational
        Date: December 2003
        Mailbox: bless@tm.uka.de, knichols@ieee.org,
                    Klaus.Wehrle@uni-tuebingen.de
        Pages: 17
        Characters: 39029
        Updates/Obsoletes/SeeAlso: None

        I-D Tag: draft-bless-diffserv-pdb-le-01.txt

        URL: ftp://ftp.rfc-editor.org/in-notes/rfc3662.txt

This document proposes a differentiated services per-domain behavior
(PDB) whose traffic may be "starved" (although starvation is not
strictly required) in a properly functioning network. This is in
contrast to the Internet's "best-effort" or "normal Internet traffic"
model, where prolonged starvation indicates network problems. In this
sense, the proposed PDB's traffic is forwarded with a "lower" priority
than the normal "best-effort" Internet traffic, thus the PDB is
called "Lower Effort" (LE). Use of this PDB permits a network
operator to strictly limit the effect of its traffic on
"best-effort"/"normal" or all other Internet traffic. This document
gives some example uses, but does not propose constraining the PDB's
use to any particular type of traffic.

This memo provides information for the Internet community. It does
not specify an Internet standard of any kind. Distribution of this
memo is unlimited.

This announcement is sent to the IETF list and the RFC-DIST list.
Requests to be added to or deleted from the IETF distribution list
should be sent to IETF-REQUEST@IETF.ORG. Requests to be
added to or deleted from the RFC-DIST distribution list should
be sent to RFC-DIST-REQUEST@RFC-EDITOR.ORG.

Details on obtaining RFCs via FTP or EMAIL may be obtained by sending
an EMAIL message to rfc-info@RFC-EDITOR.ORG with the message body
help: ways_to_get_rfcs. For example:

        To: rfc-info@RFC-EDITOR.ORG
        Subject: getting rfcs

        help: ways_to_get_rfcs

Requests for special distribution should be addressed to either the
author of the RFC in question, or to RFC-Manager@RFC-EDITOR.ORG. Unless
specifically noted otherwise on the RFC itself, all RFCs are for
unlimited distribution.echo
Submissions for Requests for Comments should be sent to
RFC-EDITOR@RFC-EDITOR.ORG. Please consult RFC 2223, Instructions to RFC
Authors, for further information.

Hmmm.... I would have thought that a single DSCP value may have
been suggested for the LE PHB... perhaps a value of 000110 would
suffice, although it's not compatible with precedence bits (which would
be CS0, although I think is better than CS1 which conflicts with AF1*).

Just my 2.3 cents,

It's a _PDB_ definition actually, so the document describes which PHBs
could be used (cf. RFC 3086). It doesn't need to make any suggestion
or recommendation for a DSCP value (which may be appropriate for a PHB
definition).

No, that's not true: CS1 doesn't conflict with AF1x.
You'll ask: Why not? (It has been said so many times before:)
DSCPs have no structure, so CS1=001000 is not in AF1x={001010,001100,001110}
(you should never apply any bit mask to the DSCP, because all six bits
must be considered). RFC2474, sec 4.2.2.1:
The DS field values of 'xxx000|xx', or DSCP = 'xxx000' and CU
subfield unspecified, are reserved as a set of Class Selector
   Codepoints.

Hi Jeff,

sorry, I hit the return key too early by accident. I had two additional
remarks (see inline).

See also RFC 2597:
7. Interactions with Other PHB Groups

The AF codepoint mappings recommended above do not interfere with the
local use spaces nor the Class Selector codepoints recommended in
   [Nichols].

Therefore, Class Selector Codepoints have always 000 in the lower three
bits, so they do not interfere with any recommended AF DSCP values.

Regards,
 Roland
