Hello,

Maybe my question is naive, but I really want to know the answer:

Is it meaningful to provide absolute Diffserv(such as EF and AF) and
proportional Diffserv (proposed by Dovrolis...) in the same network at
the same time?

Thanks,

Li

Li,

I would think that you could still offer EF via priority scheduling with
appropriate rate-limiting and AF traffic using the proportional
DiffServ. For example, you could simply set AF1x to be the best class
followed by AF2x, etc. One could also do the same for differentiating the
different AF loss priorities as outlined by Dovrolis/Ramanathan in a
different paper in IEEE Network.

However, I am not sure that the effects of such proportional loss
mechanisms has been thoroughly studied from edge-to-edge which might be an
interesting area of research. Unless there has been some recent work,
their research primarily focused on per-hop differentiation rather than the
edge-to-edge behavior.

You might also want to check the recent article in ToN regarding
proportional DiffServ by Leung, Lui, and Yau. Best of luck!

Aaron

About all we can do is something similar to OSPF's TOS routing,
discriminating on the DSCP as well as the destination address, or move to a
source/destination routing paradigm.

Hi,

It is possible to have a custom mapping between DSCP values and
classes of service. Under which circumstances, one would need
to use such custom mappings? Is it not enough to have the same
DSCP-to-service mappings as suggested in the AF and EF RFCs?

Thanks,
BalaSankar.R

Some ISPs stated a very strong requirement to have the flexibility
to create local mappings, since they did not want their service
offerings to be limited by the standard. This was the rough consensus
established in the diffserv WG interim meeting in June 1998.
(Not everyone agreed, but that's the nature of IETF consensus.)

I've answered this question on the WG mailing list since it is a piece
of very basic diffserv history that everyone needs to know, but please
follow up on the diffserv-interest list only.
