Diffservers,

With the recent RFC publications, diffserv has now finished its
charter items apart from any extra work the IESG may request on
the diffserv PIB.

After consulting our Area Directors, the decision is to
close the WG as soon as the PIB is published (regardless of
whether it is published as a Proposed Standard or otherwise,
which is an IESG decision). We've decided to leave pending PDB
work to be done in the "no diffserv WG mode" defined in RFC 3086.
Thus draft-ietf-diffserv-pdb-ar-01.txt, and any other pending PDB
definitions, will need to be recycled as individual submissions
when the WG closes.

Multicast is not covered in our charter, and the Area Directors
have decided to refer draft-bless-diffserv-multicast-03.txt to
the Routing Area.

As a reminder, diffserv/intserv interworking is considered
in the ISSLL WG, and future QOS signalling is considered in
the NSIS WG.

Regards
    Brian Carpenter + Kathie Nichols
    diffserv co-chairs

I can't speak for others but the capabilities aspects of COPS-PR have always
troubled me although for slightly different reasons. It is my view that
capabilities are abstractions of implementations. However, it is difficult
to decide where to stop. It is fine to say that a router supports
classification. But it is not that simple. A policy server (and I use the
term very loosely :) would also like to know how many classifiers, whether
ranges or lists are supported, and where classifiers can be placed in a
datapath. There is far more complexity in representing capabilities than it
appears. Therefore, my view of capabilities is that it is a convenient
mechanism not for identifying the implementation, but for defining the
hardware and software versioning that allows a policy server to implicitly
know what configuration will and won't work.

Since policies within the context of COPS-PR are specific to a given device,
clearly the implication that COPS-PR provides network level policy
functionality is erroneous.

Given the scope of application I am offering (binding of edge resource
consumers to specific services), I would suggest that core operators would
be unaffected and unaware of these configurations.

We had private discussions along similar lines at the last IETF meeting. The
challenge has always been that the RADIUS protocol has serious limitations
in it's ability to support edge provisioning issues (security, QoS, Tunnels,
etc.) Conversely, COPS PIBs, while offering more sophisticated provisioning
capabilities have not adequately addressed the authentication and access
management issues. The AccessBind PIB makes some strides towards addressing
this, but it is by no means comprehensive.

It already has. There is just no standard for it. There are lots of devices
(CMTSes, GGSNs, and BRAS products) that are using COPS, SNMP, and RADIUS in
proprietary ways to support the functionality I have described. The 3GPP
have agreed on COPS-PR because they have this very need. This is not about
whether the category exists but what the IETF will do (if anything) to
provide a standard for supporting it.

I actually favor incremental models over comprehensive models. Comprehensive
models are really complicated and have to consider many factors. Data models
(MIBs, PIBs, MOFs, Schemas, etc.) represent behavioral interfaces. If the
behavioral requirements are different for different parts of the network,
different technologies, and different implementations, the model quickly
turns into an excercise in boiling the ocean. My point was that the MIB and
PIB were conceived to address provisioning of the core of the DiffServ
network. Given the clear domination of CLI in this space, the model is not
ideally suited for edge config either.

Yes and in that same discussion, it was also agreed that if PIBs were put on
an experimental track, SNMPCONF MIBs would also be put on a experimental
track. As long as we consider the larger question (config) rather than
looking at a specific instance of the question (PIBs) I am fine with any
answer. For me at least, the question is not what should be done with PIBs,
but what should be done with config in general. When we have answered the
second question the first one becomes easy. In the mean time all config
related standards (Policy Framework, writable MIBs, and PIBs) should be
treated consistently until we sort out the first question.

I believe Randy at least is still considering his position on this. However,
Bert should be able to offer a pretty clear position on whether he is in
favor of Experimental or Informational (which to me amounts to blocked
advancement).

Hello there,
I am looking for a compilation of QoS requirements in terms of
Diffserv parameters (PHB = EF/AF/BE and Profile in bps) for applications
(unicast and multicast).
Please reply to my e-mail address as well because I am not so
sure whether my "set nomail off" has been successful.

Goorah,

You won't find it on this list, which is strictly for diffserv standards
work. Please try on the diffserv-interest list.

unicast and multicast are routing technologies, not applications. What
applications did you have in mind?

Hi all,
I have some queries relating to mapping audio& video applications and QoS .
1.Of all the existing applications, video and audio streaming demands more QoS mechanisms.
Is their is any study relating these streaming applications with diffserv.

2.This question is more or less related to the first. Please refer to some
research work which discusses relation between Audio& video qulaity and network
performance. Some thoughts about this topic is also appreciated.

3.Is expedited forwarding only way to give guaranteed treatment to audio/video
streaming applications

4.E-model of ITU-T estimates MOS by mapping voice quality with impairments like delay,
signaling and user expection. Can we related these impairments with diffserv drop precedence
for mapping streaming application with QoS.

Thanks in advance ,
Senthil

Dear all,

Traffic in the current Internet has been found to be self-similar and
multifractal. Will that change if

(1) Internet traffic changes from being dominated by TCP, Web traffic to
being dominated by real time multimedia traffic

(2) traffic conditioning mechanisms in DiffServ are introduced

Can anyone point me to any work done so far to address that?

Thanks

Hoang

I think you'll find that that's traffic at the edges, where hosts on
LANs fight it out and academics have their kit and do their
measurements.

In the core, all these slower streams are aggregated, smoothing out
individual peaks, and everything's running much nearer capacity.
Lucent rediscovered this with some fanfare last year:

http://www.lucent.com/press/0601/010606.bla.html
http://cm.bell-labs.com/cm/ms/departments/sia/InternetTraffic/index.html
http://cm.bell-labs.com/cm/ms/departments/sia/InternetTraffic/webpapers.html
Jin Cao, William S. Cleveland, Dong Lin, and Don X. Sun

This is really a discussion for end2end.

Hello,

I'm new here and I would like to gain some information about
diffserv test tools. I looked though some web sites, and I
found some test specifications, but nothing to perform them
automatically. Could you please provide me with some information
about accessible solutions? I am interested both in freeware and
in commercial ones.

Thank You very much
Maciej Pawlowski

Randy,

Here's a link to our open-source implementation
of a client side SDK for COPS. This link should
provide you with more information related to the
usefulness of PIBs. The SDK also provides source
code for a SPPI (RFC3159) compliant PIB
Compiler/Client Control Interface Generator that
integrates into the SDK.
The SDK is at: http://www.intel.com/labs/manage/cops/

Hopefully, this demonstrates industry commitment
to deliver quality and readily available
tools for easy PIB development.

Regards,
Ravi

Subject: why i should like pibs

wearing my iesg hat but being just a stupid operator, i am trying to
understand the pib/mib controversy. fyi, i currently use snmp heavily for
monitoring devices on my network. i configure using large db-driven code
and spew text-based cli to the devices.

let's assume i want to take the leap to a binary, as opposed to textual,
configuration language. i.e. for some reason(s) [which we will PLEASE NOT
discuss here] i decide to move from pushing text-based cli configs out to
pushing a binary format.

hence, i would have to push my vendors to implement snmp/cops writes for all
configuration aspects of all devices. this would be big cost for both me
and for my vendors.

why would cops/pibs be significantly better (remember it has to replace my
current investment, so it can not be 'just as good') than snmp/mibs?

randy

Could you tell me the congestion condition in DiffServ environment ?
What kinds of mechanism will we consider for escape the congestion situation ?

Thanks in advance

Minitrack on Quality of Service in the Internet

                         Software Technology Track

Hawaii International Conference on Systems Science

                             January 6-9, 2003
                          Hilton Waikoloa Village

             Web page: http://www.ee.iastate.edu/~kamal/HICSS36

Overview:

A large number of network applications, differing in requirements and
traffic
characteristics have been introduced in the past few years. As such, the
Internet is now moving from being a best-effort service provider, to a
provider
of assured service qualities. This requires the development of new
protocols, both inside subnetworks, and on end-to-end levels. Such
protocols
should deal with issues as service differentiation, pricing, congestion
control, QoS routing, resource reservation, service provisioning, etc. The
Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), as the main standard body for IP
protocol has been working on those issues.
A new and lightweight service paradigm, namely, the Differentiated Services
(DiffServ) approach has been proposed by IETF and active research is
underway
to define architectures and strategies for QoS within the Internet. Several
issues still need to be worked on, such as end-to-end service
interworking, actual protocol mechanisms and implementation,
classification and marking, the service level agreement and the service
guarantees.

Scope:
The minitrack will concentrate on complete or ongoing research in the area
of Internet Quality of Service. Areas of interest include, but are not
limited to:

- Traffic characterization
- Differentiated services protocols and signaling
- Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS)
- Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) QoS
- Layer 2 QoS, e.g., IEEE 802.1Q VLAN
- Scheduling algorithms
- End-to-end service interworking
- Congestion control strategies in DiffServ networks
- Active queue management
- Resource reservation
- Pricing
- Performance evaluation

Hi Vikram;

No, so far no other person has supported the idea of creating a Wireless
Diffserv discussion group, although I know many people are now working on
Wireless IP QoS including Wireless Differv. If you like you can email to the
diffserv list and second my proposal. That way we may be able to motivate the
experts down under to create such a discussion group.

Me too guys.

Can I join the seconders

The problems is made more complicated in 3G UMTS by the presence of circuit
switched traffic that gives an added degree of uncertainty at the acess
layer.

The admission control problem is not a trivial one partiularly with
conflicting design objectives.

Kindly do not use the diffserv mailing list for this. It is
reserved for the work of the diffserv WG. You might want to check
the NSIS working group for current thinking on signalling requirements
for (wireless) QOS, and MOBILEIP for QOS requirements for mobility.

As always, general discussions on diffserv should go to the diffserv-interest
list. See http://www1.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/diffserv-interest
