We have verified with the head of ITU-T what the correct terms would
be. "TSB" is to be officially "ITU-T TSB" (not "ITU TSB" which Joakim
proposes), and "E.164" should be "ITU-T Recommendation E.164".

Michael, can you make these changes please.

Dear Colleagues,

Since there is nowhere in ITU-T Rec. E.164 a clear definition of the term E.164 Number I
suggest to clarify this in RFC2916bis to avoid any doubt by replacing the first paragraph
in Section 1 Introduction:

"Through transformation of E.164 [4] numbers into DNS names and the
use of existing DNS services like delegation through NS records and
NAPTR records, one can look up what services are available for a
specific domain name in a decentralized way with distributed
management of the different levels in the lookup process."

"Through transformation of International Public Telecommunication Numbers
in the international format [4], called within this document E.164 numbers, into
DNS names and ...."

best regards
Richard

Hi Michael, folks,
Re. Michael's answers to my earlier questions on 340x/2916bis of 29th April,
Many thanks. I'm happy with these BUT...
<Esoteric alert>
It seems to me that...(in the future)...
IF we do define another DB/RuleStore for use with E2U, AND
we want to be able to switch from one rule store to another within
a DDDS Delegation (i.e. between rounds of evaluation) THEN
we will need to modify 2916bis to include a non-terminal flag
that indicates that the evaluation will "leave" DNS at this round
and continue in another DB. A flag need not be present in "normal"
non-terminal NAPTRs, as the implication is to continue in the
current Rule Store, but at least we would need one to indicate
that a change in rule store is required.

Of course, an alternative would be to have a terminal that has
an enumservice indicating the "new" DB that should be queried.
This would be a new delegation, rather than a continuation of
the existing one.
</Esoteric>

This is not an objection, it's just a heads up that this DB/app
definition is not completely stand-alone, and may need a change
if we add a different DB.

Pretty obscure, but potentially interesting in the future.

all the best,
   Lawrence

You are correct. 2916bis is compatible with this feature but it doesn't
enable it directly. I.e. if you do this nothing has to change other than
adding a flag, which means a client that doesn't understand it would
simply and safely ignore it.

The latest (last?!) version of 2916bis just went to the repository so it
should appear here sometime tomorrow morning....

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Telephone Number Mapping Working Group of the IETF.

Title : The E.164 to URI DDDS Application (ENUM)
	Author(s)	: P. Faltstrom, M. Mealling
	Filename	: draft-ietf-enum-rfc2916bis-06.txt
	Pages : 24
	Date : 2003-5-13

This document discusses the use of the Domain Name System (DNS) for
storage of E.164 numbers. More specifically, how DNS can be used for
identifying available services connected to one E.164 number. It
specifically obsoletes RFC 2916 to bring it in line with the Dynamic
Delegation Discovery System (DDDS) Application specification found in
the document series specified in RFC 3401. It is very important to
note that it is impossible to read and understand this document
without reading the documents discussed in RFC 3401.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-enum-rfc2916bis-06.txt

To remove yourself from the IETF Announcement list, send a message to
ietf-announce-request with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-enum-rfc2916bis-06.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-enum-rfc2916bis-06.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

So once again ....

This is a formal request for final comments within the IETF ENUM WG
working group for one document. The document below is being proposed for
forwarding on to the IESG for consideration as Standards Track RFC.

This is a working group product, which has been thoroughly discussed since
2001.

This document has undergone extensive review and revisions during the past
few months and I believe that we now have working group consensus on its
adequacy based on discussion on this list and at several working group
meetings.

The purpose of a working group Last Call is in the style of "speak now or
forever hold your peace" in case there are fundamental objections which have
not gotten previous or adequate discussion, or minor errors which need
correction.

The 2 week Last Call will begin immediately and will end on May 28 at 12PM EST

Hi Folks,
   ..and finally...
The text in 3.1.4 Publication Requirements still does not
reflect the last meeting decision that Experimental RFCs
are OK to publish. This IS reflected in the text of the last
sentence before section 3.1, so I think that the 3.1.4 first
sentence just got missed (i.e. it's a typo).

=> Please change 3.1.4. - for simplicity I'd suggest similar
text to the earlier reference (i.e. lose the end of the
sentence - "on the Standards Track or as a BCP".)

Apart from that (and a couple of minor typos), it's just right.
Good job.

all the best,
   Lawrence

Dear All

RFC 2916bis looks OK - most of my earlier comments on e-mail 23 of April
have been fixed - I just have some small problem with the text at the end of
clause 2 and first paragraph in 2.1.

It´s about the expresion "non-E.164 numbers" and "telephone numbers that are
not part of the E.164 namespace".

If I understood MMs comments on e-mail 29 of April I suggest to change the
text as follows:

- second last sentence in second paragraph in 2 - "Because of this, there is
the risk that collisions between E.164 number and non-E.164 numbers (i.e.
telephone numbers that not strictly are E.164 numbers because they are not
reachable from other countries but they are included in the national
numbering plan that is in accordance with the ITU-T Recommendation E.164)
can occur.

- 2.1 last sentence - change the end to ".... in order to distinguish it
from other telephone numbers that are not part of the E.164 namespace (the
E.164 namespace includes only telephone numbers (i.e. E.164 numbers) that
are in accordance with the rules of ITU-T Recommendation E.164).

As per the conclusions of earlier discussions in this WG, I don't think it
is incumbent upon us to define "E.164 numbers" or do anything other than
reference the ITU-T standard. I think the clarification suggested by Mr.
Stasny, to refer to "International Public Telecommunication Numbers in the
international format, called within this document E.164 numbers", removed
any ambiguity about how we used the term "E.164 numbers" (this appears as
the first sentence of section 1). The modifications proposed below seem to
be to similar effect, but Mr. Stasny's text, which has already been
incorporated, is in my opinion stronger and clearer.

The following document has undergone extensive review and revisions over
the last few months and Work Group Last Call having been concluded, the
ENUM WG requests IESG review and publication of the following document.

With the conclusion of last call on 2916bis we need to review our next
steps and I'd like to entertain agenda items for Vienna etc.

The logical place to start is to advance the enum service field
registration documents SIP AOR, H323 if there are no more contingent
dependencies, and the other non contentious registration documents we
discussed in San Francisco.
