Hi folks,
does anyone actually implement the case insensitivity flag in ENUM?

I had assumed that the i at the end was a typo in the examples in
RFC3403, as my eyes must have glazed over when reading section 3.2
of RFC3402 (on extended Regular Expression replacement syntax).
[Warning - strong coffee/tea is needed before attempting this]

I have just seen two of these "out in the wild", and wonder if
anyone's client will handle them, or reject it as invalid (as ours
all do at present, and a couple of other clients I've been using :(.

Heads up, folks!

This is another change in expected behaviour with the introduction of
references to 340x in rfc2916bis - I don't think it was there in 2916.
all the best,
   Lawrence

Hi again folks,
 From RFC3402, ss 32:
    'Furthermore, any backref replacements MAY
be normalized to lower case when the "i" flag is given'.
I do so love that MAY.
I agree that the substitution expression will be applied to an E.164
number (with the initial +).
Thus the i flag is not really important for the ERE for the ENUM DDDS
Application.
However, with the sentence I've quoted, it may matter for the REPL.

AFAICT, rfc2916bis does not require ENUMservice specifications to be
case insensitive in
the URIs they produce, so we can't just tolower() everything, as some
URIs MAY be Case-Sensitive.
(Look at the SIP archive for much past fun on case sensitivity vs. case
insensitivity).

That was not the point I was trying to make, however.
Every client I've seen doesn't ignore the i flag, it barfs (currently
including SER and *).

Thus we have not reached standards-compliance in the clients out there,
so beware.

all the best,
   Lawrence

As E164 numbers, domain names and user parts are always case
insensitive, I think any user agent should treat the regexp case
insensitive regardless of the presence of the
i flag.

for example, http URI is case sensitive.

I read that this sentence says any backref value may be normalized to lower.
but in case of ENUM, any backref value contains '+' and digits only.
other replacement field may be written in lower case.
So, I think 'i' flag is needless in ENUM.

We need sample implementation of ENUM client library.
Is there a sample implimentation?

I'm writing ENUM client library in Perl.

I want to discuss ENUM client and DNS, Registry implementation.

Hi Fujiwara-san, "dlist", Folks,
I agree with you. The 'i' REGEXP flag is ineffective for ENUM
entries.

For ENUM:
(i) the Key (to which the ERE is applied) consists only of '+' and a
sequence of digits, so the 'i' flag has no impact, and
(ii) the optional normalisation will have no impact, as any matched
part of the AUS will also consist only of '+' and/or a sequence of
digits so the backrefs are not effected.
(iii) Whatever else is in the REPL part is not effected, and can
contain any legal characters - it will NOT be normalised to lower case
regardless of the presence of an 'i' flag (at least from the
perspective of RFC3402 compliance).

* One could make a very good argument that, for ENUM, the i flag has
no effect at all; it's pointless.

* However, pointlessness does not stop some benighted folks from
putting the completely redundant 'i' into ENUM NAPTRs.

Whether or not there is a mechanism to find the person who put in such
an ENUM entry and to slap them around the face with a wet kipper (to
indicate to them that this practice has caused a number of busy
programmers to change code to no useful purpose) is an topic For Future
Study; IMHO, it's not the subject of IETF standardisation, except
perhaps for one day in a couple of month's time.

* Thus, I believe that any ENUM client implementation should IGNORE
this flag, not barf as most do right now.

all the best,
   Lawrence

Yes it is, but is on the right part of the regular expression, "i" does
not apply to it.

Note that the NAPTR regexp spec is acting on UTF-8 encoded Unicode, and
"case insensitivity" is not defined for the Unicode Character set
(without specification on exactly how the mapping is done).

As Lawrence points out, the matching is on digits and '+' anyway, so
there is nothing which really can be case sensitive or insensitive.

We have one request now from the CN-NIC folks discussing their ENUM trials
in China.

We will have the Jon's presence document on the table ...

Larry were you thinking of formalizing your implementation issues ..in
light of the discussion over case sensitivity??

Dear colleagues,

may I remind you that ETSI will hold an Workshop for ENUM Plugtests
on 24-25 February 2004 at ETSI Headquarters in Sophia Antipolis.

Everybody interested in User ENUM or Infrastructure ENUM and/or involved
in ENUM Trials is invited to partizipate and/or contribute. Contributors =
not yet
on the agenda should contact me, Patrick or Julien to get the Guidance =
Note for Presenters.

Note: This workshop is NOT a tutorial on ENUM, so it is assumed that the
partizipants have a fairly good understanding of the basic principles on =
ENUM.

More Information and also the agenda for the workshop can be found at:

 www.etsi.org/plugtests/02UpcomingEvents/ENUMWORKSHOP.htm

Via this website you also may register for the workshop
(no ETSI membership required) and also find the coordinates
hotel and car rental information.

meeting next week? He will be giving a presentation there.

I'm confused about rfc2916bis section 2.5 Enum Resolver.

I have some questions.

1. plural URIs (same service) in one ENUM entry

May I register three URIs (same service) in one number ?
Can callers fallback to the live URI?

It seems to be NO in rfc2916bis section 2.5.

for example, I want to write three NAPTR RRs in one number and I want
that callers call office and home and vacation URIs in priority order
until I answer.

 sip:fujiwara-office@example.jp first priority
 sip:fujiwara-home@example.com second priority
 sip:fujiwara-vacation@example.org third priority

2. Multi-function ENUM client behavior

Some client has plural functions like e-mail, web-browser, and telephone.
(many japanese mobile phone can handle mailto:, http:, tel: URIs.)

and we can write plural entries in ENUM DNS.
   email:mailto mailto:name@domain
   web:http http://domain
   tel tel:+telno

When the caller want to contact the callee via telephone, SIP or email.
may ENUM resolver check ENUM entry
with plural enumservice like tel or sip or email:mailto?

--- CUT HERE ---

Introduction

Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is an application-layer control
protocol that can be used to establish, maintain, and terminate (IP
telephony) calls between two or more endpoints. It is developed by the
Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) for multimedia conferencing over
IP RFC 2543. SIP endpoints are identified by an sip address in the form
of sip:jseng@sip.tech.org.sg.

Electronic Numbering or ENUM is a protocol that transform a telephone
numbers into a format for storing and retrieving Internet addressing
information. It uses Internet domain name system (DNS) to resolve
telephone numbers to network resources. For example, +65 6411 1040 wil
be transform into 0.4.0.1.1.1.4.6.5.6.e164.arpa which will be resolve
into sip:jseng@sip.tech.org.sg.

With ENUM, you are able to use a numeric telephone number to establish
SIP (or H.323) voice call instead. Beside IP Telephony, other uses of
ENUM includes unified messaging where user can reach multiple point of
contacts (phone, fax, homepage, emails) via a single number.

ENUM/SIP BoF gathers people from the region who are deploying ENUM (and
SIP)

Hi Rich,

I could offer you short reports on the following topics:

1. Plans to close the trial and go commercial in Austria with ENUM and
the ENUM-only number range (+43780)

2. A report on the results of the ETSI ENUM Plugtest Workshop taking
place one week before IETF
(if there are any ;-). Since our AsiaPacific colleagues cannot
participate because of the APRICOT
ENUM BoF taking place at the same time, they may be interested.
I in turn would be interested to hear about the ENUM BoF.

3. Michael could also give a short overview on the large AT43 VoIP and
ENUM Trial of the
University of Vienna, which is in operation since December.

regards
Richard
