All;

At the Tools meeting in SF we discussed Mission Critical Tools and
Services and an approach to gathering information, identifying mission
critical tools and services, and possible hosting by the Secretariat.

Next Steps
1. Lucy to prepare a template for information about each tool for
distribution to the group for review
   - a meta database, listing all tools and their dependencies; where
they live, what other tools they affect or are affected by. Would be
good to understand the impact of any one change on the other tools.

2. Template to placed in a wiki on tools.ietf.org

3. Tool developers to be invited to fill in the template

4. A Mission Critical Review Team would be set up from the group to
review and identify those that would be deemed mission critical and:
   a. how a tool has been written and if we can maintain it (or if
it's some obscure code)
   b. the budgetary impact of maintaing the tool and if we can afford
thats

5. Mission Critical tool developers would be approached to authorize
hosting on ietf.org because the tool is so important to the IETF.

6. Russ is to develop a policy statement for the transfer of mission
tools to secretariat

We would measure our progress in Stockholm.

Ray

All -

I've been thinking about the software maintenance issue and I think that
Henrik's suggestion that we use something like the deb-control file is
a good one. I've looked at the debian stuff and they have a set of
standard package files the would get us started:

        Package: <package name>
        Version: <version string>
        Maintainer: <fullname email>
        Description: <short description>
        Section: <section>
        Priority: <priority>
        Essential: <yes|no>
        Architecture: <arch|all>
        Source: <source name>
        Depends: <package list>
        Pre-Depends: <package list>
        Recommends: <package list>
        Suggests: <package list>
        Conflicts: <package list>
        Replaces: <package list>
        Provides: <package list>

but we probably want a bit more information as things are scattered
among several platforms, sites, etc. I've started a list:

Module: <sub-module control info> - question, are there tools the multiple
                                     maintainers for sub-sets of code?
Maintainer_Backup: <fullname email>

Network_URI: <production site>
Backup_URI: <backup site>
Beta_URI: <test site> - optional

Framework: <> - optional, do you need this?
Language: <program version> - i.e. python, perl, etc.
Revision_Control: <program uri> - how and where to store/get the stuff

Supports: <package name(s)> - may not be needed if we parse all
                                    control files

Change_Req: <timeframe> - maintainer driven
Freeze_Req: <timeframe> - this most likely relates to IETF
                                    meeting and submission dates
Contributors:<short description> - additional names
IETF: <critical:nice:etc> - This one is for Russ ;-)
Additional_Orgs: <> - ? do we track other orgs who use IETF
                                    tools - like I2 and XML2RFC?

and I'm sure I've missed some things that would be nice to have.

I know Ray was thinking that this would be a web form that the developers
would fill in and then the results would provide a contact database. I
think that may be backwards. I think we want a control file (or files) for
each tool and a parser that will scrape the results, sync, and provide
them to the team and to Ray (could be web-a-vized).

This would take a little work to regularize the data entry conventions,
but would end up being easier to maintain (as long as coders remember
to update the control file).

> What is the difference between Depends and Pre-Depends?

the deb-control man page says:

Depends: <package list>
List of packages that are required for this package to provide a
non-trivial amount of functionality. The package maintenance software will
not allow a package to be installed if the packages listed in its Depends
field aren't installed (at least not without using the force options), and
will run the postinst scripts of packages listed in Depends: fields before
those of the packages which depend on them, and run prerm scripts before.

Pre-Depends: <package list>
List of packages that must be installed and configured before this one
can be installed. This is usually used in the case where this package
requires another package for running its preinst script.

see: http://linuxreviews.org/man/deb-control/

note that control file items are mostly optional, so if there are
no pre-depends, conflicts, etc. the field just doesn't get used.

Subject: IETF-74 Codesprint information

Hi Russ,

Here is some data on the IETF-74 codesprint
(http://trac.tools.ietf.org/tools/ietfdb/wiki/IETF74Sprint):

We had 15 people signed up, and have so far made 5 releases thisn
week, based on work completed during this codesprint, and we expect
to make a couple of more releases.

The work was focused on writing django-based code to replace the old
scripts which access the database tables directly. Getting rid of
those will make it possible to change, and redesign the database, which
is pretty much impossible right now.

We've now converted 8 out of 19 scripts, according to the status page
http://trac.tools.ietf.org/tools/ietfdb/wiki/IETF73SprintLegacyScriptsDocumentation

We've also integrated a major contribution from Bill Fenner, which
provides an authentication framework which lets us
  * import old accounts and passwords into Django's native
authentication (preventing disruption when moving password-protected
    services)
  * provides a user-accessible password reset, and the possibility of
using the same password for all services which require logging in
(potentially including tools.ietf.org and rfc-editor.org logins)
  * lets us build all kinds of new applications which require login,
while retaining people's old logins. We've seen this as a must
before extending the ID-tracker to for instance provide WG-chair
    support tools.

This information is probably way too detailed to use for your slides,
but here it is, for completeness. It's taken from the changelog:
http://trac.tools.ietf.org/tools/ietfdb/browser/branch/2.00/changelog)

ietfdb (2.23)

  * Fixed a wrong link in the html agenda (from Henrik)

  * Removed the explicit database server ip address in settings.py
    (from Henrik)

  * Integrated updated authorization system. This requires applying
    database fixups as follows:

	cd /a/www/ietf-datatracker/2.23/ietf
	python manage.py dbshell < ../test/sql_fixup.sql

The existing htpasswd file can be imported into this new system
    as follows:

	export PYTHONPATH=/a/www/ietf-datatracker/2.23
	export DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE=ietf.settings
	/a/www/ietf-datatracker/2.23/ietf/bin/import-users /a/www/htpasswd

Please capture the output of the import-users script, as it will
help us resolve any troubles that users have.

  * Fixed infinite loop in wrapping code that prevented display of certain
    document comments

 -- Bill Fenner <fenner@fenron.com> 24 Mar 2009 17:48:12 PDT

ietfdb (2.22)

  * Fixed the menubar nomcom link.

  * Merged in Chris' django-based replacement for the old perl-based
WG overview page, the 1wg-summary.txt and 1wg-summary-by-acronym.txt
    pages.

 -- Henrik Levkowetz <henrik@levkowetz.com> 22 Mar 2009 2:22:09 +0100

ietfdb (2.21)

  * Merged in Adams django-based replacement for the old perl-based
    nomcom announcement pages.

 -- Henrik Levkowetz <henrik@levkowetz.com> 22 Mar 2009 1:09:00 +0100

ietfdb (2.20)

  * Merged in Roberts django-based replacement for the old perl script
    generating all_id.txt

 -- Henrik Levkowetz <henrik@levkowetz.com> 22 Mar 2009 0:20:03 +0100

ietfdb (2.19)

  * Merged in code from Pasi containing auxiliary tables and support scripts
for his new document meta-information pages.

  * Merged in code from Pasi for a machine-readable list of documents on the
    next iesg-agenda.

  * ** To deploy this release, the Django db sync command has to be run
(python .../ietf/manage.py syncdb) and the cron scripts which fetch
information from the RFC-editor and tools.ietf.org has to be set up
    to run **

I think we should take the easy path here and not provide sub-module control
info. Instead we break any tool that has different maintainer and other
info for different parts of it as two or more tools with two or more
control files.

> Maintainer_Backup: <fullname email>

Not sure about this one....

> Network_URI: <production site>

I have the equivalent of this in my control files already: "Url: <production site>",
so I agree it's something we should have.

> Backup_URI: <backup site>
> Beta_URI: <test site> - optional

I think both of the above may be somewhat useful, but I'd not focus on
them now...

> Framework: <> - optional, do you need this?

No, should be covered by the Depends: field

> Language: <program version> - i.e. python, perl, etc.

No, should be covered by the Depends: field

> Revision_Control: <program uri> - how and where to store/get the stuff

Yes, good point, and I have a close equivalent of this in the control files
I use, with the label Source: . Maybe call this "Repository:", to cover
both the case where there is an actual version control system, and the case
where the author just exposes a URL where you can get the latest version.

Agreed. Explicitly setting this violates the DRY principle

Ack.

Maybe we can re-use Priority for this?

This is for later, I think.

>

I have a Category: field which can be any of:

	author
	chair
	display
	meeting
	news
	review
	search
	share
	stats
	support
	validation

depending on which rough category the usage of the tool is.

I also have an Author: field, which is something which is missing from
the Debian control files because they don't really need it, but it is
important for us.

Regards,

	Henrik

makes sense to me

this may be a seperate issue from the control data - trying to slove the
"who do you call when the maintainer can't be reached?" question.
