Well... that's a good question. My personal opinion (at this time) is
that they probably should not.

I view www.ietf.org as "hypertext documentation about IETF", and
datatracker.ietf.org as a "document management application".

The best UI for the former probably isn't the same as best UI for the
latter.

But datatracker.ietf.org actually has two different left columns:

http://datatracker.ietf.org/idtracker/
http://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/

I think one should be enough (and it's probably needless to say which
version I prefer :-). And of course, http://tools.ietf.org/ has a
different left column..

Pasi

New authentication code was deployed on December 1. It also includes
authorization roles/groups for IESG and secretariat, but not yet WG
chairs.

Next step is to add authorization for WG/BOF/etc. chairs, but since we
don't yet have any code that would need it, it's currently not very
high on my priority list.

Code written and deployed. If Amy and Cindy agree, the moderator
script code might be tested for the next (December 17) telechat. =20
Text agenda/IESG agenda package emails will hopefully be tested for
the January 7 telechat (also depending on Amy and Cindy).

Work on retiring the old code will start when we're satisfied with the
testing results (hopefully after the January 7 telechat).

Some small progress, but no finished code yet. This will be my top=20
tools priority during the next 1-2 months.

Pasi

I'm passing this on.

Russ

= = = = = = = = =

Now, 4 1/2 days into this effort, I've come some ways, but also found new
(although not particularly unexpected) problems due to the inconsistencies
of the old database.

I've completed one full pass of converting all drafts and their authors,
ADs, email addresses etc. to the new format, and found that one of the
few aspects of the old schema I'd kept was also broken -- the idea of
storing people's names as:

   name_prefix, first_name, middle_initials, last_name, name_suffix ...

Some names just don't fit into that model, and the model also makes it
hard to undo the breakage (some persons existing in a large number of
instances in the database, with variations in how the fields are set).

I've now changed the model to having one table of known name aliases,
which can be both ascii and unicode, and should be used to look up people,
these aliases point to one and only one instance of a person record.
This record contains a preferred ascii and utf-8 full name string, which
can be edited if preferences change, without breaking lookups and document
author relationships.

I've also added more programmatic support for resolving broken author
information, (using the draft author module from the incomplete idsubmit
rewrite) which lets me handle most of the many instances of multiple
person records for the same author which exist.

I hope that the second full conversion should be complete (with all known
broken author relationships resolved) this afternoon, before our call.

After that, the next step (I think) will be to convert the email address
information which has not been automatically pulled in by the draft &
author conversion; then I'll probably look at converting the document
history information. After that, group membership conversion/creation,
which should cover most of the models in
   http://merlot.tools.ietf.org/src/db/new/redesign/models.png

I hope to manage the above, possibly with the exception of the groups,
during next week.

Best,
Henrik

I think it would be useful to put a text box on the ietf.org front
page that does the same search as https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/

Is this easy or hard?

I'm not sure we want to expose this yet, but I have found it very useful.

From the front page of the ietf.org website, I think that it should
probably not provide a list of documents that are on tools.ietf.org,
but rather the ones on ietf.org itself.

We need a volunteer to take over the maintenance of xml2rfc. Is
someone on this list interested? If not, where should we look for a volunteer?

In particular, what's needed now is somebody with TCL skills; I can help
