No one on this list stepped forward to maintain xml2rfc, so I took the
request to the IETF Discussion list. Two people contacted me. One is
willing to keep the tcl code running, and the other is interested in
rewriting xml2rfc in a different language. I've asked the pair to work
together. The next step is for them to contact Marshall Rose.

Tools Call 15 Jan 2010

Attendees:
Ray Pelletier
Bob Hinden
Magnus Westerlund
Russ Housley
Steve Conte
Glen Barney
Henrik Levkowetz
Pasi Eronen
Alexa Morris
Robert (sorry, didn't catch last name)

1. Bash the Agenda

No changes

2. Database Redesign

Henrik:
noted that authors submitted drafts with current submission tools
-- more things wrong with it than initially thought
-- people who have 5+ instances of their person data in DB
-- merging data manual work and difficult task=20

HL has run latest author extraction tool on 60K drafts
-- extracted authors (5 hours process time)
-- merged author info with the rest of the draft data

Hoping now that this is done, that there will be no more unknown =
roadblocks=20

Is this last step in DB conversion?
No. Still groups, draft comment history

Is schema for DB stable?
Yes. Very stable. Based on Djanjo 1.0, there will only be 2 inheritance =
changes

New DB and tables should be ready in next 2-3 weeks.

RH understanding that the IESG PERL code convert into Django (part of =
IDIQ)

HL: ideal scenario: can change current model to use the new DB and =
tables but writing
new code will be much nicer if using new model.

3. IDIQ RFP

Ray:=20
Round 1 , rcv'd 18ish responses
higher than expected (good news)
IAOC narrowed down to a smaller group
shortlisted for round 2
R2 proposals are due 1 Feb
25 Feb IAOC has call hoping to select and authorize for final selectees
24 Mar Award contracts to selectees

next project (april) WG Author Specs

4. WG & Author Front End Specs RFP

Idea is to provide assistance to WG chairs and authors with document =
tracking where they
can use the datatracker track where they are in WG process (last calls, =
revs, etc).
Proto team (Henrik and Allison) wrote first draft but then was shelved. =
Intent is to=20
revive spec and ensure that it's still inline. Between now and Mar IETF =
a spec will be=20
built and then use IDIQ contract to get programmers to work on it.

RFP is for spec development.

Ray:=20
- Proposals due 18 Feb
- IAOC could take action on 28 Feb for awarding a contract
- Development concludes in april

5. Secretariat Tools for Redesigned DB: Task Orders

Ray:
recevied proposals from AMS on overall work for tools. =20
work provided to secretariat is done under secretariat contract
relating to existing PERL/etc tools into Django
expecting a task order in order to present to IAOC
series of tasks expected (approx 13, could be coupled)

6. Mission Critical Tools Xfer to Secretariat

idnit - Henrik and Glen working on this
 - Next week?

7. RFC Production Center and RFC Publisher to AMS Transition Update

transition has been completed
no significant problems
volume complexity was smaller than anticipated though full rsync would =
have been nice
spam has been significantly reduced
post-transition items: ssl cert, dnssec, server cloning and replication =
(Fremont and
Orlando)
All happy with new AMS environment=20

8. Conte Update

No Code Left Behind Project - Steve to speak to Glen

9. Anaheim Code Sprint

Focus of sprint: too early to determine at this point=20
RjS -- Suggesting that we leave the sprint "open" for more personal =
progress on=20
sprint topics
HL to set up wiki
SC to handle logisitics with Marcia

10. Other Business

---=20

New Submission Tool Beta Test: February
- Any unanticipated updates? No but related to other work (author =
extraction, etc)

---=20

New Document Page UI for IESG could be used for everyone's UI. HL spoke =
about this
at IESG and everyone seemed OK with it. Some tools scrape html from =
pages that will
break if html changes (which it will). Should send a pre-warning to =
ietf-announce and
if changes are not small then expect emails with comments

GB - Isn't long term goal to eliminate screen scraping? Would this be a =
good time to
address that piece.
RH - Yes, but would rather do it against new database.

HL proposes to add a pop-up to notify users that there is a new-improved =
interface and
suggest to go there.

-- Discussion about screen scraping

Suggested that note to community with intention and ask that those who =
screen scrape
respond with their thoughts

New URL should be advertised next week

FYI

-------- Original Message --------
Subject: Upcoming Datatracker User Interface Changes
Date: Fri, 15 Jan 2010 09:28:52 -0800 (PST)
From: IETF Chair <chair@ietf.org>
To: IETF Announcement list <ietf-announce@ietf.org>
CC: iaoc@ietf.org, ietf@ietf.org, iesg@ietf.org

The Tools Team will be rolling out some major improvements to
datatracker.ietf.org within the next 1-2 months.

These improvements should make information about drafts and their
status easier to find. The IESG has been testing this interface for
some time already, and has found it a big improvement over the current
one.

However, scripts that do "screen-scraping" (parse information from the
HTML pages) are likely to break. Instead of screen-scraping HTML, it
would be better to provide the information in machine-readable form;
some interfaces are already available, and adding more can be
considered. If you want to know more, please join the tools-discuss
list, and tell what information your scripts need.

Note that this code is developed by volunteers, so bug reports and
other comments should be sent to the tools-discuss@ietf.org list, not
the IETF secretariat. If you have complaints you'd like to see
addressed, or suggestions for improvements, please also consider
volunteering to help: an IETF code sprint will be arranged in
Anaheim, too.

Instructions for joining the tools-discuss list can be found here:
https://www.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/tools-discuss/

Greetings again. If you submit an Internet Draft that is not paginated, the submission tool forces you to go to manual submission. This is just wrong, given that unpaginated drafts are perfectly legal. Why should those of us who want to save trees be penalized by manual submission?
