All -

Some time ago, Russ Housley asked me to develop a system under which
Internet Drafts would be digitally signed to verify their authenticity.

I am now beginning that project, and hope to have it completed
quickly... at least in a manual form before Anaheim.

It has come to mind that there has been some discussion on various lists
about these topics, both for drafts and RFCs.

This topic is now being taken up on the IETF IT list, "it@ietf.amsl.com".

Because of certain other IETF and ISOC projects, this task has been
delayed until now... I would like to get this moving quickly, so I'm
hoping discussion can occur quickly.

If you wish to be added to the IT list, please email me your request
directly.

Thanks!
Glen

Quick status update from my side:

There has been three datatracker releases since the last call;
highlights include:
- New datatracker main page: http://datatracker.ietf.org/
- New per-WG pages in datatracker (not really deployed yet):
  http://db.tools.ietf.org/wg/
  http://db.tools.ietf.org/wg/tls/
  http://db.tools.ietf.org/wg/charter/
- Updated most pages to use the new look-and-feel
- Ripped out everything under /drafts/, and replaced it with
redirects to the new document pages (under /doc/).
The old /idtracker/ pages are not replaced yet, however.
- IETF meeting agenda page had partially working "row coloring"
  feature; it now works.
- Merged in Robert's code to move legacy liaison statements
from hardcoded template to the database.

Cleaned my notes about datatracker enhancement ideas, and dumped
them to http://trac.tools.ietf.org/tools/ietfdb/wiki/EnhancementIdeas

Updated http://trac.tools.ietf.org/group/tools/trac/wiki/DataSources
page to describe currently available machine-readable data
sources (for building other tools based on datatracker data)

Wrote a script to check the database for violated foreign key, unique
column, and non-null column constraints (which MySQL is not currently
checking). The output was rather sad... manual edits and broken
scripts have left the database in a state where there's lot of broken
pointers (foreign keys). Some of them are causing exceptions from
datatracker code; I'll send SQL to fix the 10 or so most important
and/or easiest-to-fix constraints to Glen next week.

www.ietf.org main page now has "Internet-Drafts and RFCs Quick Search"
box, pointing to the new document search on datatracker.

Best regards,
Pasi

Tools Call 12 March 2010

Attendees:

Ray Pelletier
Bob Hinden
Magnus Westerlund
Pasi Eronen
Steve Conte
Russ Housley
Glen Barney
Henrik Lebkowitz
Alexa Morris

1. Bash the Agenda

No Changes

2. Database Redesign

HL: Converted all documents to new design with author info and group =
info and have been
working on tracing models that will use new information without changes =
other than the
model changes

Going well, not fully complete

Continuing to refine script which converts to new DB. Finding details =
that would be nice
to include, so conversion script is also developing

Sprint goal to code against new code/classes is still plausible

3. IDIQ RFP

RP: Approved 3 vendors that will be able=20

IOLA
Concentric Sky
Yakko?

Starting to build tasks

1st task is IOLA
2nd is WG Chair and Author specs (possibly May)

when will contracts be in place?
IAOC meeting on Mar 23rd in Anaheim
when will there be signed contracts?
End of March

IESG conversion may be able to start in April

4. WG & Author Front End Specs RFP

RP: Chatter on list in regard to v(1 or 2), Ed doing that.
BoF in Anaheim
Final deliverable due May 3rd (and is actively being worked)

5. Rolodex App Development Exercise

RP: (background) IAOC asked AMS to propose task order to begin sec tools =
to django
narrowed down to rolodex application. AMS undergone learning experience =
by coding from
scratch and also using the admin interface from django

GB: Django is a programming app framework using Python. One building =
block is the admin
interface, a codeset to rapidly deploy code to a DB.

Long discussions with Henrik.

Prior to admin interface, AMS had a programmer starting to rewrite the =
rolodex in django.
As it was being completed, HL and GB spoke about the admin interface.

AMS asked the programmer to do the rolodex again using the admin =
interface.

He was able to do rolodex in admin interface in 30% of the time. Now =
have 2 rolodexes that
can be viewed side-by-side=20

admin interface has some limitations, but provides for a much more rapid =
development of code

How much training to use the two apps? Not significantly different. =
Custom programming
allows for more percise interface. Admin interface is uniform system, =
so once initial=20
training is done, can be transferred to other applications

Admin interface not appropriate for everything

Everyone supports using it when appropriate. Cost and long-term =
training savings

Meeting session scheduler is an example of something that wouldn't be =
appropriate to use
admin interface.

6. Mission Critical Tools Transfer to Secretariat

idnits and rfcdiff

GB: idnits is staged on new server. =20

http://www.ietf.org/tool/idnits

Henrik to briefly look at it then Alexa to announce that it's there for =
testing.

GB: Ready to take on rfcdiff tool after Anaheim, Henrik to send

7. Datatracker UI Updates: Screen Scraping Concerns

PE: datatracker was deployed yesterday. ~drafts1
Hope was to finish this out by Sprint

four-color square in agenda. Highlights the line in a custom color and =
saves info in a=20
cookie for the user

Old /drafts interface had a draftbyworkinggroup page that is useful, so =
it will be migrated

RP: How will this work continue without Pasi or Magnus
PE: doing a lot of documentation lately to support transition
RP: Will future codesprints take us from 1.0 to 2.0 or will become an =
RFP? (how to maintain
and evolve?)
HL: Pasi has been releasing as we've been going along, so it's just =
successive releases of=20
Django and maintenance is not difference than the rest of the code base
RH: Will probably evolve on a feature-by-feature basis to sprint it or =
to RFP it

8. Anaheim Codesprint
	- IPR related to RFC 5683

RH: (background) when someone submits an ipr statement against ID, the =
application tracks
that. When draft is published, the IPR statements doesn't transfer to =
RFC number. Should
it be automatic? =20

PE: if you search for rfc or search for iprs, it does show the relation
example: http://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/rfc5683/ and click "IPR =
disclosures"

HL: I think the fix could be to re-word this to
" Search result on RFC5683, "Password-Authenticated Diffie-Hellman =
Exchange (PAK)"
No IPR disclosures directly on RFC 5683 have been submitted, but =
there
are disclosures on draft-brusilovsky-pak that was later =
published as RFC5683."
=09
RH: so it may be a wording issue only. Henrik to change wording and will =
be in next release
RH: Please notify Alexa so she can notify Yelstin after release

9. Conte Update

Sprint room is ready, but confusion on room (Lido A or Lido C).. Alexa =
to get clarity

- to continue deep inventory, send out before sprint

- chase Asia/Pac server for tools, send specs note to Robert Sparks to =
pass on to his=20
colleague

10. Other Business

GB: Draft signing project: provided RFC to describe draft signing. This =
will be signed by
the secretariat (human) with the intent of proving that the draft was =
actually received by=20
secretariat. Will not disrupt existing files, will be adding new =
signature files. Will be=20
ready soon after Anaheim

AMS had to extract data from old server to new server. Since then AMS =
workign hard to clean
up but trying to simplify. Has been 2 years since initial deployment =
and new versions of OS
out (OpenSuse). All of AMS' other clients have gone virtual to =
consolidate and optimize.

Wants to upgrade to 11.1 (no cost), no hardware, done with existing =
resources and done slowly
and side by side.

Wants to semi-virtualize IETF. Runs on 3 machines, 2 in Freemont: 1 =
production and 2 hot
backups. GB wants to insert virtualization layer so that there will be =
better migration and=20
easier to to replicate server

Performance impact of virtualization should be very low but server =
drives will be faster and=20
have more RAM

FYI ...

-------- Original Message --------
From: Julian Reschke <julian.reschke@gmx.de>
Subject: [xml2rfc] new test release of xml2rfc available
...

Hi,

I just applied the pending patches, added test cases, and minimal build
files at <http://trac.tools.ietf.org/tools/xml2rfc/trac/>.

The following issues/bugs were addressed:

#1 <http://trac.tools.ietf.org/tools/xml2rfc/trac/ticket/1>: "typo in
historic (RFC 2026 10.4) boilerplate"

#2 <http://trac.tools.ietf.org/tools/xml2rfc/trac/ticket/2>: "Support
Trust Legal Provisions 4.0"

#4 <http://trac.tools.ietf.org/tools/xml2rfc/trac/ticket/4>: "Support
new ID boilerplate proposed by IESG" (*)

#5 <http://trac.tools.ietf.org/tools/xml2rfc/trac/ticket/5>: "remove
nonsense http-equiv=expires output"

A test release (for people running this locally) is available at
<http://trac.tools.ietf.org/tools/xml2rfc/trac/browser/releases/xml2rfc-dev.tar.gz>.

NOTE: the boilerplate updates do NOT depend on the @ipr value, but
depend on the document publication date; I have set the cutover date to
June 01, so that we have sufficient time to get this tested & deployed,
avoiding inconsistent Internet Draft submissions (see also samples/ folder).

NOTE: this release does NOT include support for the "Headers &
Boilerplates" changes for *RFCs* (not IDs), as implemented in December
2009. Thus, this release can not be used to generate 2010-ish RFCs (we
need to open a ticket for that).

Feedback appreciated,

Julian

First - let me say thanks to Julian for doing this and second one small =
issue.

I don't think the tool should automatically change the IPR based on the =
date and with no human change to the xml. What we don't want is someone =
to claim that the draft was not submitted under the IPR rules in the =
generated .txt file because they did not read it and it was generated by =
an IETF tool from the input the human provided which was the xml. People =
have to be aware of what IPR rules they are submitting under. I'd be =
fine with after tool not producing a .txt file and printing an error =
that said "You much change the value of ipr=3D"foo" to ipr=3D"bar" for =
this version of the tool to work. Note this will produce different =
boilerplate text".=20

PS, I would also love it if there were some way to find out which =
version of the tool you were using. It could print it ever time. It =
could have a --version flag. Perhaps there is already something I don't =
know about.=20

This was a design decision we made many months ago, for the TLP3 (in
September) change.

The reason we did this was the flood of people being confused by the
fact that they needed to change their source to submit a new draft (for
the previous change).

I agree that a change to the IPR that actually is more then editorial
shouldn't happen silently, but this is IMHO not the case for the last
two TLP changes.

For the online mode, it seems that would require serious changes. For
the offline mode, it could be as easy as printing to stderr. That
*should* be simple with TCL, but who knows? I can barely read it :-)

I would suggest that you create a ticket with the proposal; maybe
somebody who's better at TCL hacking can give it a try.

All -

Good morning. I wanted to let you all know that I am here at the IETF meeting
today and this week. As several of you have indicated that you want to talk
to me, I thought I'd just remind everyone that I'm here and at your service.

Today I have set up shop at the center table in the terminal room, and will
be here almost all day, barring a few step-out meetings.

Sunday through Wednesday I expect I will be sitting at or near the secretariat
registration desk each day, and, again, will be there almost all day.

I will also be available on video iChat/Jabber if desired (as soon as our
internet comes online in the terminal room!), at:
	JID: glen@amsl.com or JID: glenbarney@jabber.org

Please feel free to call, ping, alert, summon, and/or otherwise grab me at
any time as desired!

[Blind-copying many people at AMS - the secretariat - so they can comment if
they wish and yet not be burdened by ongoing discussion if they do not wish.]

All -

As you all probably know, the existing tools and tool sets are totally broken
with respect to the IRTF. We have trouble scheduling meeting sessions. We
cannot add RG chairs except via massive surgery. The upload tools don't work.
And all of this is because the IRTF was "hacked in" as a "special exception"
into the database.

This is, of course, totally ridiculous.

Henrik is currently redesigining the database, and I mention this to him in
the hope that, under the new database, the IRTF is no longer special, but
instead simply standard.

It seems to me, for example, that, FOR TOOLS PURPOSES AT LEAST, the IRTF
should be treated as an AREA, and the research groups treated as working
groups.

>From our point of view, we spend a great amount of time hacking database
entries simply to achieve this end result. There is no reason I can think of
that this should be the case.

So presented for your consideration and discussion: Can we please PLEASE find
a way to make the IRTF "normal" once again - hopefully with the AREA/WG model -
so that we don't ever have to feel this pain again!

Thanks!
Glen

Confirming: This is indeed the case for the new database schema.

That said, even in the old horribly convoluted database it's more about
having the tools support the IRTF case than anything else -- if I don't
misremember totally, the tables support the IRTF case all right, without
much special-casing; it's more a matter of the schema being so convoluted
that it's hard to do anything without special tool support ...

Best,

	Henrik

This is fantastic news. Thank you Henrik for making this easy!

We will address these in the tools rewrites we are undertaking.

Thank you!
