IETF Tools Call - 15 June 2011

Attendees:
Ray Pelletier
Henrik Levkowetz
Matt Larson
Peter Saint-Andre
Alice Hagens
Karen Moreland
Julian Reschke
Robert Sparks
Tony Hansen

1. IT Projects in Work

	DB Conversion (IOLA)
=09
RP: Just finished work order #4. able to lay out work in front =
of them. work
order #5 should be approved tomorrow.=09
HL: work order # 6 still has about 2 months of work left =
(post-Quebec), however
should be able to start testing against the new code=20
RS: Should new schema still be good for mid-June?
HL: Information should be placed into the wiki soon
RP: Any other requirements for Quebec or anything else we should =
do for/in=20
Quebec or will this be carried over into Taipei?
HL: New schema probably won't be the major focus for Quebec =
sprint and would like
to see new DB in production first so people don't have to be =
converted
=09
Front End - WG & Alt Streams (YACO)
=09
HL: YACO has completed first cut and needs to update in respect =
to changes in the
RFC. Still has issues to resolve around the WG items.
=09
	xml2rfc (Concentric Sky)
=09
HL: CS has invited HL to take a look at current code and test =
run it. first test
was 3 weeks ago and basics looked good. Have been working hard =
on supporting the
varients. Plan is to run new code against a number of xml =
source files and match=20
it to existing output and look for diffs. Julian interested in =
testing also.
	RP: Are they on schedule?
	HL: Yes.
=09
	Draft Tracking Tool (YACO)
=09
HL: originally gave YACO a repository branch with old schema, =
but gave them the branch with
new schema and they are now started on the work.

2. Spec Development
	Back End (AMS)
=09
AH: Spec has gone through last call, but there's more revisions:
KM: IESG is waiting for feedback from IANA
RP: Would like to get this to development to be completed this =
year.
=09
	Charter Milestone Management (Hoffman)
=09
HL: no new information on this item.
RP to ping Paul to find status

3. Apps
	IETF Meeting Calendar App (Pusateri)

HL: email from Tom Pusateri stating that he'd like to write iPhone =
app for agenda
and meeting calendar. Had seen it previously and thought it'd be =
great for IETF
meetings. HL said that folks would be very appreciative of an app =
like this.
JR: suggest that it work on open source rather than native IOS
HL: understands but a native app would be really nice if it works =
well

4. Vol Tools
	Quebec Code Sprint

RjS: Reminders are being sent out currently to get them to sign up. =
Planning is=20
expected to follow same pattern as the past few code sprints.=09

5. Agenda Scheduling Tool (AMS)

   =20

6. AMS Tools Development Update (AMS)

Should be ready to demo in Quebec

	RFC Management
	IETF Meeting Session Management
=09
KM: both in development and should be ready to demo in Quebec
=09
	Materials Management=20

   =20

7. AOB
   =20
HL: working on: moving nomcom pages to secretariat servers, assisted =
by Matt. =20
Should be able to see the pages in the next day or so and will be =
ready to point
    to nomcom chair=20
RjS: has a set of requirements for a better mail archiving to look =
at against current
    product?
RP: Next call is 20 July (week before IETF)
   =20
   =20
   =20
   =20

All -

I have a first pass of requirements for a more effective email =
archiving/browsing solution.
Please review and let me know what is missing or should be different.

Do any of you know of existing systems that meet most or all of these =
requirements?

Well, if these tool changes came for free, I'd agree.

Right now we have xml2rfc.tcl (with nobody except Tony being able to add
things), rfc2629.xslt (by me, willing to experiment), and the new tool
which is work-in-progress about which I don't know the current status
(are the developers reading this???).

That would be inconsistent with how <author> works today. Not sure that
it makes sense to diverge from that.

I'm not repelled at all. (There are lots of other things about the
RFC/ID format I *am* repelled of :-).

I don't think that building the index using artwork makes sense, unless
you can manage to generate it properly including page breaks and page
numbers.

That being said; the content model for sections inside <back> is the
same as inside <middle>.

In HTTPbis, we put production rules under a common element, such as
"Grammar productions", and then use subitem for the actual entry...

All -

Good morning.

As many of you are aware, we had two more slowdowns following the one I
reported. This is bad.

In the first case, which occurred at about 0440 Pacific time, the server
rebooted itself (correctly) before I could get to it and came back online.
This is good, because at least we know the server reboot system appears to
work.

In the second case, which occurred at 0645, I caught it in the act; and,
although the server was heavily impacted, I was able to get control of it
before a reboot. This is also good, because I was able to catch things in
the act.

As was the case yesterday, the impacted process was Apache. This time, I
was able to also confirm that a python process being kicked off by apache
was failing. This process caused the apache footprint to go from a normal
resident memory size of 55M to a size of 12GB. Swap was almost completely
exhausted, and the server was crawling.

11744 wwwrun 20 0 19.2g 12g 5140 D 6 78.2 22:11.82 httpd2-prefork
13641 wwwrun 20 0 578m 57m 6700 D 8 0.4 4:51.13 httpd2-prefork
16574 wwwrun 20 0 569m 55m 6436 S 0 0.3 1:52.44 httpd2-prefork
17010 wwwrun 20 0 574m 59m 6584 S 0 0.4 1:50.91 httpd2-prefork

It has been mentioned by Steven that he was trying to enter a position at
the time, and the server choked right when he tried to do so. Regardless
of whether his action triggered this, the hints I'm seeing make me believe
at this point we have this down to something within the datatracker, and we
need to work further to find out what is happening.

I am copying the Tools Team, and Henrik, and will be asking them to help with
log analysis to see if they can determine why the webserver is crawling. As
you can guess from the above output, I have a snapshot program running which
takes server information every five minutes and writes it to a file. Now
that I know this is a webserver/python (and therefore datatracker) issue,
I've added additional data to the file capture. Still, I hope that we will
be able to resolve this quickly.

Note that since nothing has changed recently in terms of Python or the
datatracker (or the server), it may take some time to localize this. It
could be some heretofore undetected recursion issue or something similar.
This is why I will be asking the tools team to step in and assist.

Thanks,
Glen

Rolf -

THANK YOU! I am copying the tools team on this, and am preparing additional

I did too. No point in reverting unless we could get every user in the world
to revert... which we can't. :-)

Tools team -

You've already read my report to the I*** in which I explained my findings
thus far.

My data at this point is as follows:

By 0320, things were going downhill:

----------------------------------------
Mon Jun 27 03:20:01 PDT 2011

Load average still looked okay (w):
 03:20:01 up 9:25, 2 users, load average: 3.16, 3.43, 2.76
USER TTY LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT
root xvc0 21:29 4:42m 0.22s 0.22s bash
henrik pts/2 18:09 9:10m 0.04s 0.04s bash -i

But check out the free memory (from free -lmt, down 10GB from 5 minutes ago):
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 16394 15354 1040 0 8 2326
Low: 16394 15354 1040
High: 0 0 0

Total: 24584 15354 9229

And note that two of the apache processes were now using that 10GB:

Note that two apache processes were impacted. When I do a grep on POST
requests from the datatracker log around this time frame, I see nothing
but POST /doc/search/ requests, except for these two identical requests,
at just the right time:

134.226.56.7 - - [27/Jun/2011:03:16:57 -0700] "POST /doc/draft-ietf-payload-rfc3016bis/edit/position/ HTTP/1.1" 302 - "https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-payload-rfc3016bis/edit/position/" "Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:5.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/5.0"
134.226.56.7 - - [27/Jun/2011:03:19:07 -0700] "POST /doc/draft-ietf-payload-rfc3016bis/edit/position/ HTTP/1.1" 302 - "https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-payload-rfc3016bis/edit/position/" "Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:5.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/5.0"

The next slowdown occurred starting between 0510 and 0515. And here again I
see similar requests:

134.226.56.7 - - [27/Jun/2011:05:11:38 -0700] "POST /doc/draft-ietf-payload-rfc3016bis/edit/position/ HTTP/1.1" 302 - "https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-payload-rfc3016bis/edit/position/" "Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:5.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/5.0"
213.145.205.249 - - [27/Jun/2011:05:14:55 -0700] "POST /submit/status/33455/f52ef05298cd7945af3596bafd20aa63/ HTTP/1.1" 200 33982 "https://datatracker.ietf.org/submit/status/33455/f52ef05298cd7945af3596bafd20aa63/" "Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; en-GB; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100401 Firefox/3.6.3"
213.145.205.249 - - [27/Jun/2011:05:15:05 -0700] "POST /submit/status/33455/confirm/aeb3677f2a2be33d87708522a2da1fae935688fa/ HTTP/1.1" 200 33245 "http://datatracker.ietf.org/submit/status/33455/confirm/aeb3677f2a2be33d87708522a2da1fae935688fa/" "Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; en-GB; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100401 Firefox/3.6.3"

I am thinking that something might be wrong with either the code, or the
database entry, relating to ballot positions.

Thoughts would be welcome!

Glen

All -

I have sent detailed data to the tools team and Henrik, but I wanted to alert
everyone to a pattern I've seen during my analysis:

This request:

POST /doc/draft-ietf-payload-rfc3016bis/edit/position/ HTTP/1.1" 302 -
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-payload-rfc3016bis/edit/position/

was seen in the logs at the start of both slowdowns, and I now suspect that
there may be database corruption and/or some problem with the code related
either to ballot positions generally, or this draft specifically.

It comes to my mind that, while I was gone, a request came in to clear the
ballot positions for a draft, which the secretariat did. This may have been
the draft that was cleared - and clearing it may have caused some type of
problem for the datatracker.

Of course, the datatracker should not loop or fail even if data is bad, but
not all possibilities can be forseen.

It is my hope that we will both be able to correct a potential database
problem, and find and harden a potential datatracker bug, quickly.

In the meantime, until we hear from the tools team, it might be best to
at least refrain from voting on the above draft, if not all drafts.

If you do vote on a draft, and get a response, don't get too excited either
way. The server actually survives for an hour or more once the bug starts
using resources (I'm actually proud of this - it's a HUGE server with lots
of resources - the old servers would have died much more quickly. ;-) so
things can appear okay for a while.

Now that we know what to look for, we can catch it earlier, but I'm still
hopeful for a quick fix and repair today.

Thanks,
Glen

Excellent, Steve, and good point. It now does appear that updating the
ballot positions may be the problem... I just sent an update to the I**** .
We need to wait for tools team analysis but I see you cc'ed them so that
will certainly be appreciated by them!

Ahh, thank you Robert. That means that (hopefully) the secretariat's action
was not related to this.

But we still do have a problem either with this draft, the database, or the
datatracker. I'm going to make the 20 minute run to the office in a bit, but
we will keep watching to make sure things are cool. We'll try and do some
more testing later this morning (Pacific time), but I hope the tools team
beats me to it. :-)

I have reproduced the failure on a local instance and believe it to be =
related to the code that formats email messages
before we send them. Henrik is looking at that now.

The trigger was the URL Stephen entered (the spaces at the beginning of =
the line have to be there to trigger the bug)
   [1] =

Hi Magnus -

Thanks for helping brainstorm. In this case, I'm pretty confident that =

All -

Fantastic news!

I have just heard from Henrik, who informs me that Robert Sparks was not only
able to duplicate the issue, but actually find the bug, and provide a patch
for it, which Henrik tells me has now been applied to the datatracker.

So there was a bug in the datatracker, and it was resolved, thanks to the
very excellent effort of Robert Sparks.

THANK YOU ROBERT!

And thank you Henrik for helping, and letting me know!

We'll keep watching...

All -

In my haste a few hours ago to regain control of our impacted server, I
halted the rsync server (since it was running a number of rsyncs.) I have
restarted it, and it is working.

But to ensure that everything is "fresh and clean" after the loading, I am
going to reboot the ietfa production server momentarily... at, say, 0910PDT
(five minutes from now.)

This should only take a minute or two, and there is no need to panic. I will
be watching the whole thing. But I'd like the server to have the chance to
clean up, just as a reliability thing.
