All (as a heads up) -

If things go as we think they will over the rest of the week, we will
deploy the facelift next Monday.
This will go like any other deployment, but the look change will, of
course, be more noticeable.
We have a fallback in place if we uncover any blocking issues after
deployment.

I don't think we need to spend any time on this call talking about this
item.
(We'll talk about facelift later in the agenda).
If anyone has questions about the other upcoming releases that aren't
answered
in the comments below, please bring them up before we get to Tuesday.
> - Liaison Tool improvements -- Robert
In progress - finishing the mapping to groups and building the list of
default contacts.
> - Agenda Tool enhancements -- Robert
In progress - nothing new to report since IETF92
> - Performance improvements -- Henrik
> - Review Tracking -- Robert
I hope to have a revised draft out mid-week next week.
> - Facelift -- Robert
We expect this will have been deployed before the meeting - I'm sure
we'll have a few things to discuss.
> - Report on email handling in the datatracker -- Robert
We are working on the change to the ballot editing page that will let
the ADs copy a working group (and will
copy a working group by default). We have a script to scrub working
group lists out of the Notify field and
will be socializing that with the IESG and working group chairs early
next week. It will run after the
first maintenance release after the facelift is deployed.

We are starting in on normalizing when and to who the tracker sends
email (remember the large spreadsheet
from just before the Dallas meeting). We're looking into making that
more data-driven (as opposed to hard-coded)
where it's feasible to do so.
>
> 2. Community & Other Projects
> - Present a directory view of active, archived, and unknown I-Ds	-- Robert
This has become "normalizing the way artifacts are stored and presented".
The draft Archive and the Repository are now exposed with http and rsync.
We have been classifying the contents of the filesystem, and moving
cruft aside.
I expect we will complete the majority of restructuring where we are
holding files
before the next tools call.
> - Can we turning off the FTP service? -- Robert
I expect talking this down to take a noticeable fraction of our meeting
time.

Nothing new to report here. We will cover the dependencies these are
waiting on later in the call.

We are testing with the full archive, adding testers slowly.
We are starting to get some load data, but the number of users is still
too low to extrapolate from
(see http://devc.amsl.com/mrtg/)
The testers we have are finding some fun issues that were pre-existing
in the archive, but IMAP made easier to find.
We are gathering information about how to configure clients at
http://trac.tools.ietf.org/group/tools/trac/wiki/ImapTesting
Alexey is making some tweaks to how the server responds to subscription
requests to induce the better behavior out of clients as we learn more
about them.

> - VM Architecture for Servers -- Robert
In progress - the above topics on normalizing where artifacts are kept
and analyzing how and when email is sent and received are the active
efforts.

An update -

The facelift merge to trunk is going well, but there are a few remaining
issues uncovered by the crawler to address.
The deployment will most likely happen tomorrow.

I'd also like to add a short conversation about the codesprint and the

We are getting some good feedback from early testing.

Here are a few highlights:

* The server is very responsive - I'm finding the access to be
incredibly useful in my own testing (mostly due to the organization and
search features in the clients I'm using to test with.

* We have a non-trivial number of malformed Date headers that we
discussed during the call. I'll look into what will be involved in
moving those to an X- header, preserving the original information and
perhaps adding an explanation, and providing a well-formed Date header.

* We have a _lot_ of spam, and a lot of lists (particularly mirrors of
external, closed, lists) that are ingesting a significant number of new
spam messages per day. These are easier to see with an IMAP client, and
are more expensive to us when we expose the archives over IMAP (since
clients will download them).

* We are getting some traffic data, but not yet enough to interpolate
from. That said, I made a client download the entire archive from a
high-bandwidth location. You can see the result at
http://devc.amsl.com/mrtg/ - look at the burst that lasted most of
Friday and into Saturday.

* We are knocking the server over with early testing, but Alexey thinks
he's isolated and corrected the problem. We'll expand the tester base
when we've checked that it's as stable as expected with the correction.

There's a small mismatch between what that implies and what we said on
the call.
If I heard you correctly, the username above wouldn't be an individual's
username, but would instead be something like "nvo3-chairs"?
What do the usernames created in the system so far look like?

Is the username provided here the one that will be set up to have access
to the newly created calendar?
(as opposed to some user that has permission to create new calendars - I
assume that falls out from running this as root?)

The username is simply the WG acronym. Since the username ends up in =
the subscription URLs, this produces nice, clean URLs. For example, the =
6MAN calendar account is "6MAN".

I assume that falls out from running this as root?)

The username here is the account the calendar belongs to. So to create =
a calendar for 6MAN, the command was:

/a/www/www6s/DAViCal/cmdlnutl/davical-cmdlnutl --user 6MAN --create =
--collection 'calendar' --public

The suggested default is to use 'calendar' as the name for the user's =
primary calendar. This also ends up being a component in the URL.

For consistency with the mail list conventions, we should probably use =

I expect to change the layout in one of the next releases so that all
external files are in one tree of the static files area, with names
that include version strings, while our own files (which can change
from release to release to release without being renamed), are served
from another tree under the static files area. That should let us
set a very long (4 weeks or more) Cache-Control: max-age setting for
the version-named external files.

I expect to handle the necessary changes to the Apache config at release
time in cooperation with Glen and Jermaine.

(This is not something we can easily fix at once, because external
files and own static files are commingled in the same trees in many
cases, even if I've tried to move external files into 'lib' directories
-- that's not enough to let us easily set different max-age values.)

Best regards,

	Henrik

Dear Tools-Development...

Recently there has been some discussion about optimizing various parts of
the server filesystem, especially in regards to the placement and location
of Internet-Drafts. I note that we now have a one-stop location for all
Internet-Drafts we know about "/archive/id/".

But there is one additional location that contains Internet-Drafts that we
didn't consider - and that's the proceedings directories. As you may know,
each proceedings subdirectory for each meeting contains actual copies of
all of the Internet-Drafts referenced during that particular meeting.

# ls /a/www/www6s/proceedings/91/id | wc -l
719

# ls /a/www/www6s/proceedings/90/id | wc -l
1273

In the past, when we "burned CDs" of each meeting's proceedings, that might
have made sense. But we no longer do that, and I'm wondering if perhaps
there might be a better way of handling this - such as hard- or sym-linking
- in the future?

Submitted for your consideration....

Thanks!
Glen

Glen:

Thanks for the suggestion.

Back when we burned CD-ROMs for the proceedings, it made sense to have =
an actual copy. We do not do that any more, so it seems to me that =
links to the archive copy is completely fine.

What do others think?

Russ

Glen,

I think links are fine (and am pressed to contrive a scenario where hard
links would have been an issue even when cds were produced. )

That said, what are you trying to optimize? I suspect that the bytes saved
on disk will be quite small, perhaps 5-7G, when evaluated against modern
disk sizes and labor to optimize....

Lou

Lou -

I am not necessarily trying to drive anything specific here, but I am
rather supporting the efforts of the Tools Team whenever I possibly can.

In this case, I *think* (but he will correct me) that it was Robert who
originally began working on optimizing things - not only for space but also
for efficiency and manageability - so I'll defer to him on any commentary
as to the reasoning.

Thanks! :-)

Glen

Hi,

Has anyone here ever needed to post large artifacts for their WG? We have that need in sacm - meeting recordings are the largest we have (the collection is over 1GB now), otherwise, a few MB of data per file, which can probably be posted to the wiki.

At present, I’m using Dropbox to store, and make available, meeting recordings (so as not to clog our available space on WebEx). Unfortunately, this can’t be accessed by everyone all the time, so I’m hoping to find some IETF-related home for such files. I had originally wanted the wiki to be their home, but, upload size is limited.

Regards,

Adam
