I just wanted to take a moment to report back that the IETF server
upgrade to OpenSuse 42.3 has been completed. It went better than
expected. There was a 30 minute Mailman failure during which 9 emails
failed to process - I sent emails back to the senders asking them to
resend. Apache had 2 minor expected interruptions of less than 5
minutes each. And the ISODE IMAP server failed unexpectedly (and
silently - I was alerted by Pete Resnick) requiring a manual restart
of the ISODE processes. Beyond that, it went off perfectly, and all
systems survived the upgrade without additional issue. Many thanks to
Henrik, Matt and Ryan who were working with me while the upgrade ran.

And, just as kind of a universal slap in my face... just before I
started this upgrade this morning, I got an email from OpenSuse
announcing their *next* OS release, which just came out - OpenSuse
15.1. (Yes, for some reason, they did s/14/42/ on their version
path. Must be a Hitchhikers Guide thing.) *sigh* There's always
something. But we'll wait a while to let that release mature before
we upgrade again.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions, or see any
problems going forward. Thank you for your patience during this
process.

Glen

All,

On the last tools call I was asked to gather some metrics comparing the =
response times of the mail archive static pages vs. the MHonArc pages. =
To do this I used httperf, https://github.com/httperf/httperf =
<https://github.com/httperf/httperf>, to gather stats using test runs of =
24 sample URLs. Here is a summary.

MHonArc
Request rate: 58.5 req/s (17.1 ms/req)
- very fast

Mailarchive static pages, not cached
Request rate: 2.3 req/s (431.0 ms/req)
- much slower but still under 500ms

Mailarchive static pages, cached
Request rate: 71.7 req/s (14.0 ms/req)
- faster than MHonArc

The third run is passed through Cloudflare CDN. Real performance will =
vary as the first page retrieval needs to get passed to the origin =
server. Subsequent retrievals are very fast. The most recent index =
pages are flushed from cache any time a new message for the list arrives =
so they would be most susceptible to cache misses. Older pages don=E2=80=99=
t change at all meaning good cache performance. =20

Hi,

I think the suggestions by Robert and Ryan roughly match the kind of =
capabilities requested//suggested in the feedback received on the =
website.

Would it be helpful to develop something like a mock up UI to understand =
how search results might be presented to the user and further tease out =
what would be required to implement it?

If so, I=E2=80=99d be happy to create a few wireframes for further =
consideration (by whomever would be most appropriate).

Thanks,

-Greg

You could filter by type and indicate the type in search results, using =

Yes, we should at least try it out.

> If so, how do we test it?

Disable Henrik's workaround for a few test mailing lists (with known p=reject participants) and try to gather information about bounces from DMARC/ARC enforcing recipients (these would be observed by moderators of such mailing lists). We should also ask mailing list participants whether they are noticing any gaps in message threads.

I was also asked by Allison about status of IRTF related feature requests. Can somebody tell me where they are on the overall priority list?

Best Regards,
Alexey

This turned out to be driven by misreading what the results were. We had
round of email with Allison and found (and deployed) ways to improve the
way results were displayed to avoid that misreading.

a volunteer picks it up earlier)

This one's a bit bigger task, I may end up needing to do it.

Hi all,

I'm at a conference in Trondheim and will not be able to make the call.
I'm hoping the notes provide an update on the RFC Tools; I haven't heard
anything recently outside the RPC's testing.

Thanks,
Heather

Tools Team Report -- 13 June 2018

1. Datatracker Projects
   - The work on GDPR compliance delayed some of the other activities
     -- See http://trac.tools.ietf.org/tools/ietfdb/wiki/MergePlan
   - All of the user facing changes for GDPR Compliance have been
deployed, and the management commands for removal of consent-
based information will be completed in the next few days.
   - A small number of people need to give consent for information in
the datatracker; this is mostly people that have biographic data
but do not currently hold leadership positions. These people will
be sent an email next week asking for consent. The email will
include a link to their datatracker account page. If they do not
go to that page by 25 June 2018 (one month after the GDPR became
effective), then the information that was not gathered from
Internet-Drafts will be removed from the datatracker.

2. Community & Other Projects
   - The Tools Team is working to discontinue MonArch email archives.
This will allow all of the mail-related tools to work from one
copy of the archives in maildir format. However, the community
clearly still likes the speed offered by MonArch. Changes to the
Mail Archive Tool that use static pages greatly improve speed.
These changes will be deployed by these steps:
       1) Enable mailarchive.ietf.org on Cloudflare;
       2) Change the name of the setting from "legacy" to "static";
       3) Deploy on the production servers; and
       4) Send not to the community.
   - Many mail lists did not have SPAM filters in place. Last week,
the Secretariat allied a SPAM setting to all of the lists that
did not have one, and then sent instructions to the WG Chairs
about making adjustments. Going forward, newly created mail
list will get the SPAM filter setting, and the list maintainer
     can adjust if they wish.
   - Secretariat removed over 30,000 SPAM messages from the archives.

3. RFC Services Projects
   - RFC Format contracts are on schedule:
     -- IDnits
     -- Publication Formatter
     -- Text Submission
     -- RFClint
     -- SVGcheck
     -- XMLdiff
   - The RFC Editor chose Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) Tiny as the
subset of SVG that is allowed in RFCs. SVGcheck makes sure that
the embedded graphic conforms to this subset. It was recently
discovered that some tools use markers for arrowheads, but markers
are not part of the SVG Tiny specification produced by W3C. The
development will continue without allowing markers, and the RFC
Editorwill revisit this issue if it becomes a problem for authors.

4. Server Infrastructure
   - The custom DMARC-handling software is deployed for all mail lists.
   - There is a desire to move away from the custom software to ARC.
First, the ARC software will be installed on the sandbox, and
then the Secretariat will determine whether it has the knobs to
configure it for a few mail lists, but not all of them. If so,
they will run a test on the production server with ARC on a few
volunteer mail lists. If not, we will ask the ARC developers to
     add the needed knobs.

5. Other Business
   - The RFC Editor is conducting an experiment with GitHub for AUTH48.
TLS 1.3 will be the first document in the experiment.
   - The web pages for the Tools Team need to be updated. Work will
begin on this effort in the next few days:
     -- https://datatracker.ietf.org/group/tools/about/

6. Parking Lot
   - Prepare the RFC Production Center code for publication.
-- Maybe this can get some attention when the six RFC Format tools
are posted in an open source repository.

I appreciate this last item. I was looking through archives for some
long-concluded working groups a couple of weeks ago, and was reminded of
the Bad Old Days when we weren't filtering SPAM at all.

This is great! One thing to consider is what action visitors might take =
after coming to the page=E2=80=94go to another page, register for =
something, sign up to a mailing list, etc. (This will differ for IETF =
participants, potential participants, non-participants). There=E2=80=99s =
an option in Wagtail to add a =E2=80=9Ccall to action=E2=80=9D block at =
the bottom of pages. See the IETF Hackathon page as an example:

https://www.ietf.org/how/runningcode/hackathons/

The Code Sprint page might also deserve review:

https://www.ietf.org/how/runningcode/code-sprint/

We=E2=80=99ll have a photographer at IETF 102, so could capture photos.

Let me know if there=E2=80=99s anything I can do to help (especially on =
the www.ietf.org page(s)).

Thanks,
-Greg
