 Hello,

I just wanted to let you know that I have added a new -l17 "extreme"
compression quality setting to the NHW Project.I find this setting
competitive with x265 (HEVC).Actually I have tested -l17 on 15 rather good
quality images, and on these images I prefer the results of the NHW Project.

We can still save 2.5KB per .nhw compressed files.

More at: http://nhwcodec.blogspot.com/ .

I start wondering if for extreme compression I should add a post-processing
function in the decoder that would remove some aliasing for some images,
just like HEVC intra has post-processing functions like deblocking and SAO
filters.

As detecting aliasing seems quite difficult, would it be possible to use
for example machine learning, that would be trained to detect aliasing
patterns?

But first, do you find the results of the NHW Project at extreme
compression good in their current state? Or should they be post-processed
with aliasing and other?

Any feedback is very welcome!

Cheers,
Raphael

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Internet Video Codec WG of the IETF.

Title : <Video Codec Requirements and Evaluation Methodology>
        Authors : Alexey Filippov
                          Andrey Norkin
                          Jose Roberto Alvarez

	Pages : 25
	Date : 2019-02-03

Abstract:
This document provides requirements for a video codec designed
mainly for use over the Internet. In addition, this document
describes an evaluation methodology needed for measuring the
compression efficiency to ensure whether the stated requirements are
   fulfilled or not.

The IETF datatracker status page for this draft is:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-netvc-requirements/

There are also htmlized versions available at:

Please note that it may take a couple of minutes from the time of submission
until the htmlized version and diff are available at tools.ietf.org.

Hello,

I have just added a new -l18 "extreme" compression quality setting to the
NHW Project.I find this quality setting very good and actually better than
x265 (HEVC) at extreme compression.

First, I wanted to let you know that compression of the wavelet DC image is
really not efficient at extreme compression, I have the fast ideas to
improve it, and so we can really save 2.5KB per .nhw compressed files in
average at extreme compression (this is confirmed by recompressing the .nhw
files with a compressor such as paq8px or other).

I don't know if my eyes play trick on me, but I have tested -l18 "extreme"
compression quality setting on 30 rather good quality images, and on these
images I clearly prefer the results of the NHW Project compared to x265
(HEVC)!!!

More at: http://nhwcodec.blogspot.com/

Your opinion would be greatly appreciated as if it can be confirmed that
the NHW Project is better than HEVC at extreme compression, it would be
really great news, as the NHW Project is furthermore royalty-free and a lot
faster to encode/decode.

Again your professional opinion would be very welcome!

Many thanks!
Cheers,
Raphael Canut

Hello,

For those interested, I have added a new -l19 "extreme" compression quality
setting to the NHW Project. This -l19 quality setting is really competitive
with x265 (HEVC) on rather good quality images.

An important remark: we can really save 2.5KB in average per .nhw
compressed file as the entropy coding schemes are not optimal, especially
at extreme compression.I have the fast ideas to improve it.Will have to do
it.

More at: http://nhwcodec.blogspot.com/

I will have to study a little deeper the psychovisual model I use for
extreme compression, because on 5% of the images, certain kinds of images,
it is better to switch it off...

Again, it would be great if you could consider the NHW Project as
furthermore it is royalty-free and ultra-fast, I know it is impossible to
compete with VP9,HEVC, AOM AV1, VVC, but maybe there would a niche these
codecs don't cover and where the NHW Project could shine, because I feel it
still lacks of consideration by the industry (but of course this is only my
opinion)...

Many thanks!
Cheers,
Raphael Canut
