On August 25-26, 2003, the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) and the ITU
organized a joint workshop on ENUM and Internationalized Domain Names (IDN)
in Bangkok, Thailand. All materials are posted on the workshop web site.

http://www.itu.int/osg/spu/newslog/2003/08/28.html#a165

I highly recommend taking a look as some of these since they highlight ENUM
Trial activity in Japan, Korea and Australia among other AsiaPac nations

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Session Initiation Proposal Investigation Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Using E.164 numbers with the Session Initiation
                          Protocol (SIP)
	Author(s)	: J. Peterson, H. Liu, J. Yu, B. Campbell
	Filename	: draft-ietf-sipping-e164-04.txt
	Pages : 15
	Date : 2003-9-2

There are a number of contexts in which telephone numbers are
employed by SIP applications, many of which can be addressed by ENUM.
Although SIP was one of the primary applications for which ENUM was
created, there is nevertheless a need to define procedures for
integrating ENUM with SIP implementations. This document illustrates
how the two protocols might work in concert, and clarifies the
authoring and processing of ENUM records for SIP applications. It
also provides guidelines for instances in which ENUM, for whatever
reason, cannot be used to resolve a telephone number.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-sipping-e164-04.txt

To remove yourself from the IETF Announcement list, send a message to
ietf-announce-request with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-sipping-e164-04.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-sipping-e164-04.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

I'm pleased to report that the latest beta firmware for the SNOM 200 SIP
VoIP phone now supports RFC 2916 transparently.

http://www.snom.com/snom200_en.php

What this means is that I simply dial the ENUM enabled E164 number from the
key pad of the SNOM phone as if I were making a international call from
North America as in

011,87810 xxxxx xxxxx

It translates the number into the FQDN, preforms the look up into
e164.arpa, finds the enumservice field for SIP, processes the regexp and
establishes a SIP session based on the URI and displays the URI in the LED
display of the phone.

all in about 400-600 MS based on a number of calls I've made.

If there is no response from DNS to the query it makes the assumption that
the call is on PSTN and submits the call to the registered sip proxy for
processing assuming that phone=yes in the To: field.

the calls btw were on a 1.5/380 ADSL line and flawless even with my wife on
line at the same time.

I'm sure both lists would be interested in other products that support ENUM
directly etc.

in the preparation for the VoiP/ENUM Tutorial at RIPE-46, we had a little
H.323 ENUM bakeoff.

Participating were the nic.at Asterisk Linux IP PBX in Vienna, and the
www.innovaphone.com ISDN/IP PBX in Germany. Asterisk was massaged by Otmar
Lendl who had just implementend H.323 ENUM lookup in the Asterisk call
processing. Martin Streller of Innovaphone is the implementor of the ENUM
code in their PBX.

Martin and Otmar got transparent Internet trunking with ENUM to work
between an Asterisk and an IP-3000 - you dial a number with a DDI extension
on the other PBX as you normally would - NO ACCESS CODES OR TRUNK
PREFIXES!! - as there's an ENUM entry and both PBXes do ENUM DNS queries
in outbound call processing the call is delivered via IP (h.323 in their case).

An interesting aspect of the Innovaphone device is the fact that it can do
drop & insert - it has a network-side and a user-side ISDN port; if you
plug it between the telco line and a vanilla PBX, it can act as a least
cost routing device based on ENUM lookups - on outbound calls coming from
the PBX, it will lookup the number in the DNS and divert to the Internet -
otherwise the call will go to the telco in the upstream port. Which means
that your old PBX could use ENUM in & outbound unchanged.

I would expect this to become more widespread as PBXes with IP & ENUM clue
appear on the market.

BTW Innvoaphone has a very elegant scheme were configuring an extension i
the PBX automatically produces a corresponding DNS entry - the PBX itself
also acts as an ENUM DNS server for the pilot number and extensions.
Currently their boxes are h.323 only but they plan to implement a SIP stack
as well.

Hi Folks,
Me too, but using SIP :) All get checked in ENUM before
processing. Works fine.

The reason I follow up here is that I note that ENUM code and the
configuration systems
that are coming out to populate the ENUM entries need some work. We
can standardise
processing in the (I sure hope soon to be) RFC, but what's out there
in the field is
not necessarily what we've agreed.

I've seen 2916-compatible entries, 2916bis entries, some strange
unregistered ones
(either in 2916 or in 2916bis order/syntax), and multiple entries with the same
order and priority.

Also, I note that the processing code for some boxes treats only the
first NAPTR it
handles as the "one to return", regardless of order and priority.

Thus these corner cases (multiple NAPTRs, mixed syntax, unregistered
enumservices)
will occur. Even if "your" ENUM entries are correct, the client box
that does the
ENUM lookup may not behave quite the way one expects, so - be careful out here.

Whilst it isn't a standards issue, I think that we are getting to the
point where
interworking test sessions would be useful.

all the best
   Lawrence

Hello.

Are there any ideas, whether a Sip/H.323 Enum caller should
give its Fully Qualified E.164 Number as calling party information=20
or its protocol dependent Uri ? Or maybe both ?

If someone is calling out by means of ENUM, shouldn't he/she indicate
ENUM-reachability ? What shall be present in the call-list of the=20
call-recipient's IP-phone ?

Eg. H.323 allows for both types of information, a numerical calling=20
party number (e164) and an H.323-URL, as well. The e164 would serve as
key into the backward ENUM query - provided it's fully qualified.
e.g. for a german no.:
e164=3D49 123 4567 89
url-Id=3Dh323:89@mygateway.mydomain.de

What's it for Sip ?

Regards Martin
