online rfcdiff bug: no diff when file 1 a URI and file 2 is uploaded:

using: https://www.ietf.org/tools/rfcdiff/ ( version 0.11)

for file 1, "enter URL" -- fill in with known-good URI for an RFC or I-D

for file 2, "Upload file:" -- browse & select local known-good file

click on "Generate diff"

Results:

an overlying dialog is rendered containing message "File 1 seems to be empty."
and an [OK] button. <https://www.ietf.org/tools/rfcdiff/rfcdiff.pyht> is now in
location bar.

Click OK. Rendered view remains denoted as
<https://www.ietf.org/tools/rfcdiff/rfcdiff.pyht>, and differs from
<https://www.ietf.org/tools/rfcdiff/> primarily in that the left sidebar is
absent.

<https://tools.ietf.org/rfcdiff> yields similar results except that the URI in
location bar remains static.

tested in Firefox 7 and Chrome 16 with same results.

HTH,

=JeffH

Is there html-ified rfc-index, a la the tools.ietf.org/html regime, whose links
are to tools.ietf.org/html RFCs ?

If not, as seems the case (tools.ietf.org/html/rfc-index 404's), it'd be pretty
useful. There could be a link to it from <https://tools.ietf.org/html/>, plus
the "New RFCs" rfc-index blurbs that are listed on the latter view could be
more fully html-ified.

thanks,

=JeffH

That's very easy to do with XSLT based on the XML version of the RFC
index; do you want to give it a try if I start with a simple (ugly)
version for you to complete?

I just subscribed to this new list. I've not seen JavaScript
in outbound mail before and am not sure that's the best idea
for us really if that's what this is trying to do. It also
doesn't render very well in my MUA (just as seen below).

Anyone know what's up?

This is presumably a configuration bug in mailman. It never used
to do this.

Yep, cut'n'paste error only. Steve young replied a
few minutes after the original mail. Problem should
be gone now.

There's http://tools.ietf.org/rfc/, which has existed for a long time. I just
put up a new page too, http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfcs, which is more in the
style of http://tools.ietf.org/html/

I'll look at fixing that next.

There's no coupling from email changes for the Mailman lists and email
changes for drafts in general.

I've checked the draft alias list, and for a number of drafts, the aliases
reflect the new <tom.tailor.stds@gmail.com>, but there are still some where
the old address is present. I've now added an entry to my fixup-table so
that on the next generation of the alias list the old <tom.tailor@rogers.com>
address will be replaced with the new one.

Best regards,

oh, ok, thanks, that's pretty much what I was looking for but couldn't find.

but both of those lack links for obsoletes, obsoleted by, updates -- thus the
former meets my particular needs better (fwiw).

thx again :)

Some comments..

on https://tools.ietf.org/html/ :

"(Full index pages to htmlized RFCs are available, too: plain, mini, 2-column.)"

should perhaps be..

"(hypertext RFC indexes: traditional, mini, 2-column.)"

Also, the page title for https://tools.ietf.org/rfc/ (i.e. traditional) is "RFC
Mini-Index" -- perhaps it should be something else?

As far as I know there is no canonical HTML format for RFCs.

Presonally I prefer what xml2rfc generates.

Well, there's none for PDF and PS but they are accepted.

I like xml2rfc as well, but I'd like to be able to point people to "the"
HTML version generated by the author for review. Right now people host
them on private pages, and that seems to be suboptimal.

The canonical format is .txt. There's no canonical roff, HTML, PDF,
PostScript or any other format. I don't mean to say that everyone
should use xml2rfc -- I understand that some old I-Ds that are still
around might pre-date xml2rfc, and not everyone enjoys editing
documents in XML. But I don't see many alternatives -- perhaps a
TeX<->XML? that would make LyX a viable I-D/RFC editor, which would be
oh-so-neat. Or perhaps a set of macros for LyX that makes it output
.txts that pass I-D nits.

In any case, the current status quo works for me.

I just realized that I managed to confuse the list :-)

Of course I don't want to promote publishing in custom HTML formats.
xml2rfc's HTML output works, although I of course prefer what
rfc2629.xslt generates.

The proposal is about allowing the author to upload the generated HTML
version so it has a public URI on the IETF site.

IMO if you want HTML then submit .xml and let the server generate the
other formats from it.

Well, the server doesn't.

And even if we did, I wouldn't want the default xml2rfc output.

Because nobody has implemented yet. FWIW, as many of the XML files being
submitted are incomplete, it would be a good way to encourage submission
of complete files.

I already said so a few mails ago: because I prefer the output of
rfc2629.xslt, in particular as it provides many features that xml2rfc
does not have (for details, see
<http://greenbytes.de/tech/webdav/rfc2629xslt/rfc2629xslt.html#extensions>).

And the PI include directives. And references to local includes the

Absolutely. On the other hand, people will come with pitchforks when the

the ID submission starts to complain.

I think it should complain, adding in a few well-chosen insults (HTML5 =
can include voice snippets, too), but accept the "XML" anyway (renaming =
it to .broken-xml in the process).

As you note, we allow uploading ADDITIONAL versions for other, non-txt formats.
I agree it means that we should allow it for an html version, too.

It might be worth a moment, to ask whether any or all of these other formats
should have some conventions imposed on them? I could readily believe that the
fact that they are secondary and that we seem to be doing fine without
specifying the non-txt conventions, that it might not be worth the effort to do
it now.

Thought it worth posing the question, though. For example, most html versions
use html rather minimally.

Thanks all.

Fixed now; I set up a new virtual web server for a test server for the
big upcoming datatracker release (the schema conversion release)
(http://tracker.tools.ietf.org/), which went fine. Then I also copied
that setup as a virtual ssl server, but missed adding the SSL cert info
for that instance on the master server, with the result that the http
servers wouldn't start when the new config was pushed out during the
night...

Sorry for the inconvenience!

Best regards,

	Henrik

In the new meeting materials manager, is there a way (at least for those
with upload credentials)
to see when the most recent version of a presentation was uploaded? If
not, it would be very useful
to add so multiple people aren't having to ask each other out of band if
someone's uploaded this
most recent change to a given presentation yet. It would be an extra
bonus if you could tell _who_
did the upload.
