This is a (small) contribution towards the codec specification deliverable.

This version replaces draft-terriberry-codingtools-02. I added a section
on a new reduced-overhead arithmetic coding approximation we have been
experimenting with, but the remaining sections remain unchanged.

Hi,

Just to let everyone know that I resubmitted the PVQ draft under the new
WG name:
https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-valin-netvc-pvq-00

For those interested, there's also a demo on the topic:
http://people.xiph.org/~jm/daala/pvq_demo/
as well as a conference paper:
http://jmvalin.ca/papers/spie_pvq.pdf

Cheers,

At the most recent webm summit, early results were presented for VP10
that showed a 3-5% rate savings for using a 12-bit reference frame.

In the case of Daala, the savings are similar, however on some clips the
gain is much greater due to the particular transform and prediction
design (the quilting issues seen earlier).

Using full precision increases memory bandwidth 50-100%, depending on
the implementation. We need to decide if this is an acceptable tradeoff.

In addition, high-bit-depth input will also need this, and although it
is much less common, there seems to be a trend towards supporting it in
VP9 for hardware decoders. So, the question is more if we want to have
two profiles, one for 8 and one for 10-12 bit, or only have one decoder
profile mandating 8-12 bit support.

[as chair]

We now have a preliminary agenda up for NETVC at the upcoming meeting in
Prague:

https://www.ietf.org/proceedings/93/agenda/agenda-93-netvc

Note that the mentioned Thor document isn't yet in the repository, but
we expect it to be available prior to the document deadline on Monday.
Also, while the requirements slot mentions only
draft-filippov-netvc-requirements, the plan is to incorporate the
contents of draft-moffitt-netvc-requirements into that document prior to
the document deadline as well.
